While normally, I trust Fr. Serpa’s opinion, I think I need to see something with a little more authority. It may be due to the gruesome experience my sister had while on the pill. She had three miscarriages, all of which occured after four weeks. She also got pregnant a fourth time while on the pill and that child she carried nearly to term and lost her in the last month. After that, she quit the pill entirely and I can’t say I blame her. It was heartbreaking. Perhaps that is why I’m cynical.

Very sorry to hear about your sister. I will keep her in my prayers to the BVM.

My point about this issue is that it gets confused with the sin of contraception. It really is boilerplate moral theology.

What do you mean by boilerplate moral theology. I’ve never head that phrase before.

Maria1993, this decision is completely between you and your doctor. It is not, absolutely not, a sin to seek and accept treatment. If it is shown statistically that this treatment will help you have children in the future, and may assist in preventing cancer, that is an added benefit. My best advise would be to go ahead and accept treatment, but if you are still doubtful, seek counsel of your parish priest or confessor. God Bless.

Seeking a second opinion on any health matter is always a good idea.

Maria, regarding the pill specifically, if it is not being used as a contraceptive, you need not worry about it. My sister works for a Catholic organization and when her doctor prescribed it for her (NOT as a contraceptive) her health plan (through the Catholic hospital) approved it.

The person I was responding to was complaining without a foundation. To me, that’s inappropriate regardless of intent.

I don’t know if you noticed, but my following post was directed to the OP recommending a source for a second opinion (which is hopefully useful information). So it is possible to suggest an alternative without violating forum rules.
