(NO offense for the others in this-it’s just for humoristic purposes. )

Heh. I thought both stories were funny, and my whole (reasonable) family is Protestant. Most Protestants find those folks a little nuts, and most Protestants don’t object to religious images, although they might display a little knee-jerk image-a-phobia. (Lord knows that sometimes I do, too.) Many just tend to be misinformed about how Catholics use those images, as they tend to be misinformed about the history and content of the deuterocanonicals.

Incidentally, I enjoyed the word “humoristic,” as well.

Yeah, I have to admit, coming from a Southern Baptist background even, I never heard anyone make such a big stink about idols or graven images. But I think that it may just be b/c there are so many Catholics IN Louisiana. The population seems to be more tolerant as a whole. Nevermind that my diocese is the 4th smallest in the nation. But I know it exists. When I was working on Katrina relief, I worked with several folks from Georgia. I heard all about Mary worship and the like.

Idols are forbidden in Catholicism, if those statues truly were used and being worshiped as God, then we would have a problem. But, thankfully, as a Catholic I do not think a statue is God

gosh, it’s everywhere, just drove past the county courthouse and there is a 20 foot plastic Santa Claus (exceedingly ugly, if it matters). I understand they actually paraded him around town, accompanied by marching bands, cub scouts, veterans, floats loaded with more graven images, and even public officials riding in convertibles, which of course means the government has given its stamp of approval to this display of idol worship.I am shocked, shocked.

Not only is that a violation of the commandment against graven images, but it’s a violation of my civil liberties. Why should I have to look at a figure modeled after a Christian saint and associated with a Christian holiday, especially one displayed on public property? It only serves to persecute me by reminding me that I am in a minority, so I will call upon the ACLU to make up a totally new interpretation of the first amendment.

Oops, wrong extremists. Seriously, though, that sounds like a violation of good taste, at the very least.

One could argue that the Santa floats and trips to visit santa have become idolotrous because it takes Christ out of Christ’s Mass.
