This new film version of the Deluge narrative looks beautiful and epic.

It appears to have drawn some criticism from Protestant previewers though? The filmmaker is Darren Aronofsky, who I believe is a catholic(?), and the film was originally proposed in the wake of the huge success of Passion Of The Christ all the way back in 2004.

Personally I think it will be worth watching. I’m not a massive fan of Russell Crowe (that’s another story, re: how he performed, vocally, in Les Miserables 😛 ) and I don’t go to the cinema much, but I think it will be worth watching on a big screen. I think I’ll shout my parents to see this one too 🙂

I can’t wait to watch it, based on the trailer it looks like it will likely be good or at least worth watching. And good to see that there are still Catholic/biblical themes in the movies.

Russell Crowe, as javert, is possibly one of the worst casting decision in the history of cinema. That being said, I’ll probably go see Noah, if for nothing else, to see the special effects which look spectacular in the trailer.

I personally don’t think he was that bad for most of the movie. That said, he could have at least been emotional during Stars and Javert’s Suicide.

As for Noah, I’ll probably wait and read reviews first. So far, it doesn’t actually sound so promising.

Oooh I could harp on about this all day hehe… I was so disappointed with how he performed Stars and Javert’s Suicide, two of the more/most powerful songs in the musical. Another topic for another thread perhaps 🙂 Staying on the topic of Noah, I’ll definitely give it a go… who knows I could be pleasantly surprised by Crowe 🙂

I’ll probably go see it. I am a “massive fan” of Russell Crowe 🙂 but he was sorely mis-cast as Javert. But Javert was an aberration in an otherwise stellar career. As long as there’s no scene with Noah singing about pairing up the animals, I think he’ll be ok. 😃

:rotfl:

…and now I can just picture all the animals going up into the Ark in a conga line…

Looks good! Based on the bible, reasonable events that could happen as they’re building the ark. I wonder if there’s going to be a part 2.

jk

I doubt I’ll go. The trailer didn’t impress me since I’m not into heavily CGed movies like this one seems to be.

I found an analysis of the script, by someone who’s actually read it, here: godawa.com/movieblog/darren-aronofskys-noah-environmentalist-wacko/ and it’s not positive, at least from a Christian viewpoint.

I guess if you like that style of movie and you can ignore the obvious disparities between the Biblical version and the film version then go for it. For me, it doesn’t look like something I’d want to spend my time on.

Did you actually read this review??? If anybody is a “wacko”, it’s Godawa.

Yes I did. I found it interesting because he’s actually read the script.

He may be a bit over the top sometimes, but I think several key points he made were valid.

One other reason I won’t go is that I think that the only way for us to get film makers to put out really good films with well portrayed Christians and true to the Bible story lines is to refuse to give them money for doing otherwise.

As long as we reward those in the mainstream media financially for the type of films they are making now, they have no incentive to change.

Nope. Godawa has it absolutely spot on. If the movie follows the script as outlined by Godawa, then his critique is warranted and very much consistent with Biblical truths, Judaism mainstream Christianity and Catholicism.

Could you explain what it is about his review that you find “wacko?” You might be confusing his depiction of the script with his critique of it. Otherwise, I have no idea what you find so off about his critique.

Godawa’s reaction appears to be from the point of view of a Sola Scriptura position. Where as the film appears to incorporate elements of the Enoch account and some aspects of the Gilgamesh tale.

The film does NOT portray the flood as global, which is fine to me, but I suspect viewers like Godawa may be upset at that. The Catholic Encyclopaedia says the flood was “probably not” global(as we know it today), saying that the author was limited in knowledge of the size of the geographical world, and I happen to agree with it.

I stole a peek at the script. Here’s the salient section:

CROWE:
“Hey Lord! I got yer green alligators,
And long-necked geese,
Yer humpty-backed camels
And yer chimpanzees,
Yer cats and rats and elephants,
But, Lord, I’m so forlorn,
I just can’t see no unicorn…”

The joke’s on you. I know the song.
