I listen to an Eastern Orthodox podcast on occasion. I recently listened to a podcast on Theology. I’ve included transcripts at the end. Pretty much the author argues that theology is pretty much teaching others about an experience of God. He then argues that philosophical theology is at best a waste of time and at worst a temptation to heresy.

Here are the transcripts.

Personally I agree to a point. Thinking about philosophical theology to the point that you neglect your prayer life is harmful. However I think that philosophical theology is valuable for defending and explaining the Faith. What are your thoughts?

This person expresses an important dimension of theology.
But how does the creed fit into this? In fact, the Orthodox too consider the creed something very important.

My thoughts on theology is that it can be a noble endeavor with a great responsibility to attached to it. Theology is by definition speculation… so there are limits and the responsibility is to respect and adhere to the limits because those speculations will influence the thoughts and actions of others…

Too much theology and too little action is nothing but mental masturbation.
