Alright, I went to Wendy’s on Tuesday night and ordered a Jr. Bacon Cheeseburger. The woman who gave me the bag was Muslim (she was wearing a head covering, covering all her hair, but, far back on her brow).

I went to a Chinese Buffet yesterday and there was a Muslim couple there. The woman was wearing her head covering. Pork was served there as well.

I went to a sandwich shop yesterday. I am not sure if the guy operating the cash register was Muslim or not, but, what is the law/ruling on this? Can you all work at places that serve pork and support businesses that offer it?

I don’t know about the majority of Muslims, but there are some in the US and UK demanding that they’d not be required to handle pork or alcohol products in the supermarket or slaughterhouse. Some had sued and lost like the guy in the UK against Tesco.
 
I think the ruling is that if one can find another job, he must quit yet out of complete necessity he might work in such businesses. It is like eating pork, it is haram, but out of necessity it is ok.
 
Well, in Indonesia where the majority of people are muslim, what I can say that some muslims are fanatic, even they don’t want to wash any dishes which are used to fried pork etc, but some are not fanatic and they are fine with those things.

It’s safe not to do so . One must try hard to find a new job & ask God to provide a halal ( lawful) income .

A Muslim must not drink , serve alcohol. Drinking alcohol is prohibited in Quran . Regarding Hadith , God does not accept the prayers of those Muslims who drink alcohol , allow spaces for keeping & selling alcohol ,serving , write records of selling alcohol etc.

Eating pork is forfidden . Not sure about serving . As so many alternate jobs are available in earth ; a Muslim should try his/her best to find a job where s/he does not have to come in touch of this forbidden meat.

yes we can. Some people take things a bit over the top .
 
It’s really better to avoid that sort of thing, especially earning money from it. If you think about it, how can your income be lawful if it was earned by selling something unlawful? There are plenty of Muslim-owned gas stations, for instance–they sell alcohol, which is clearly unlawful to do.

So it’s better to avoid earning money that way.

Eating at restaurants where unlawful things are sold is different, I think. If you can and want to avoid it, great. It’s very difficult to do here in the US though and takes a lot of commitment (and planning… ).

I have seen Muslims of my country work in the deli - where they sell pork as part of the menu. I have also seen Muslims work as dish-washers in the food-malls (where there are Chinese stalls with pork on their menu as well). However, i do feel bad for them because of what they have to compromise with. It doesn’t hinder them since they know its their bread and butter. But, there are also bar owners who are Muslims and serve alcohol - not because they have to but because they know the money is better. As for Malaysia and Indonesia, if a Muslim was asked to handle all things pork and alcohol, there will be riots and protests. Thank goodness i live in a secular country where even Muslims can live peacefully with their non-Muslim countrymen.

We must be very careful where wine is served , porks can be mixed with halal foods etc. Taking these lightly / minor sins may lead us to committ major sins in future ( God forbid).

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) warned us against the pervasive effects of sins on our souls. He said that when a person commits a sin, it falls like a black dot on the clean slate of his heart.
If he repents, the dot is erased.

If, however, he persists in the same and continues to sin, the dot will continue to expand until it covers his entire heart, in which case his spiritual soul becomes completely sealed off. As a result he fails to recognize good as good and evil as evil.

The Prophet said this is what Allah has repeatedly warned us against in the Qur’an: “Nay, their hearts have been sealed by the sins they have accumulated.” (Al-Mutaffifeen: 14).

Allah Almighty knows best.

It is predictable to see differing opinions in legalistic systems because , after all, what is the drawing line? what are the limits of legalism? do not adore graven images, ok, do not make graven images to adore them, ok, do not have curtains with images (what??), do not have books with images, do not take photos, do not draw, do not, and do not and do not, and certainly do not use your brain and the law becomes ridicule and the behavior becomes even more ridiculous than the misinterpretation of the law.

Muslims in general have to abandon such jobs, if they continue working in them they would fall in something called “Shubha” which leads to the sin, because there are authentic hadiths that prohibit dealing with pork and wine:

**Sahih Bukhari, Volume 3, Book 34, Number 438: **
“I heard Allah’s Apostle, in the year of the Conquest of Mecca, saying, “Allah and His Apostle made illegal the trade of alcohol, dead animals, pigs and idols.” The people asked, “O Allah’s Apostle! What about the fat of dead animals, for it was used for greasing the boats and the hides; and people use it for lights?” He said, “No, it is illegal.” Allah’s Apostle further said, "May Allah curse the Jews, for Allah made the fat (of animals) illegal for them, yet they melted the fat and sold it and ate its price.”

صحيح البخاري:
سمع رسول الله ‏ ‏صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏ ‏يقول عام الفتح وهو ‏ ‏بمكة ‏ ‏إن الله ورسوله حرم بيع الخمر والميتة والخنزير والأصنام فقيل يا رسول الله أرأيت شحوم الميتة فإنها يطلى بها السفن ويدهن بها الجلود ويستصبح بها الناس فقال لا هو حرام ثم قال رسول الله ‏ ‏صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏ ‏عند ذلك قاتل الله ‏ ‏اليهود ‏ ‏إن الله لما حرم شحومها جملوه ثم باعوه فأكلوا ثمنه ‏

“The Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) said: Allah has cursed wine, its drinker, its server, its seller, its buyer, its presser, the one for whom it is pressed, the one who conveys it, and the one to whom it is conveyed.”

سنن أبي داود:
قال رسول الله ‏ ‏صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏ ‏لعن الله الخمر وشاربها وساقيها وبائعها ‏ ‏ومبتاعها ‏ ‏وعاصرها ومعتصرها وحاملها والمحمولة إليه ‏

Have you considered sometimes the Muslim has to eat when in foreign lands? Not all places which serve wine, means they also serve pork.

So if the Muslim dish-washer who works in a canteen that has to wash plates which non-Muslims ate in means he is sinning? Have you considered that could be his rice-bowl? Especially during this economic downturn, what would you expect him to do? Quit his job and join the multitude of jobless people out there? Let him and his family starve so Allah can be merciful?

Allah is not only the Most Merciful, Allah is the Sustainer, and the Provider of all Nourishment and Provision. Our food, our homes, and our clothes, these are provisions from Allah.

What you offered is first of all, only excuses.

But secondly, it’s worthwhile to point out that a starving man may eat pork if it’s his only option to preserve his life.

Yes I know the meaning of the phrase. It was only the relation to the topic at hand which eluded me. But while I was laying in bed last night, the answer occurred to me, and the statement seemed even more profound in that light. 🙂 I wish I’d gotten it sooner.
