I am new here but I have noticed that almost every post by a traditional Catholic results in a novus ordo Catholic questioning or arguing as if everything traditional Catholics say is somehow an assault on them.

This forum is called “Traditional Catholicism” - presumably that means it is for discussions along that line.

It seems that no post can be left without some kind of attack. Even the papal vestments thread which started out with praise for Marini and the Pope ended up with people bitterly saying that the new Gothic chasubles are better and the traditional ones ugly.

There are lots of forums here for those of you who hate tradition - why don’t you use them and leave the traditional Catholics to their little space here?

The name of this board is “Traditional Catholicism.” It is not “Traditional Catholics.” This is NOT a little space for Traddies to talk about their issues. It’s a board for the discussion of Traditional Catholicism. Some people think that Traditional Catholicism is stupid. Or, more often, they don’t like one or two things about it. Or - most often - they just disagree with some particular statement or idea.

This is a board for discussion. It is not a fellowship and support board. If somebody thinks that the Pope’s vestments are ugly, they are allowed to say so.

I go to a Traditional Latin Mass. I may argue with people or disagree with things said here, but I don’t think I’m hijacking or bashing or whatever.

Catholic Answers Forums is generally an apologetics board–so it naturally draws those who debate what is and what is not the truth (and who also debate other things). Therefore, it is only fitting with the general theme of the site that the merits of a position are discussed and compared with potential alternative positions. The specific nature of CAF aside, from my experience, there is a tendency for this in any discussion forum on any topic (religious or otherwise).

I don’t think many people who post on this site “hate tradition” though. In fact, in the other sub-forums on this board you will find tradition vigorously defended against non-Catholic polemics quite often :).

And there’s a problem the OP was talking about right there…calling people Traddies just because they support the Tridentine Latin Mass. Discuss all you want, but cease with the namecalling.

It has been observed that people tend to migrate to media outlets that support their particular state of mind on almost any topic. People generally, in my opinion, do not like to have their positions, life styles, etc. challenged. It is much more comfortable when we can surround ourselves with folks who agree and support our favorite “things”.

I am one of those unfortunate individuals that finds himself neither a traditionalist nor a progressive. It gets upsetting sometimes when someone who is firmly seated in one camp or the other challenges some notion that I hold dear, but it does keep the heart beating and the brain racing.

Additionally it seems to me a good thing to be able to gain some insight into what, why, and how others follow their Catholic Faith. Perhaps the most interesting and touching are the stories of those who have “swam the Tiber” or who have decided to “return home.” 🙂

The purpose of this forum is to allow those interested in traditional Roman-rite Catholicism to discuss issues of concern to them. Secondarily, it can serve as an online community for traditionally-oriented Roman-rite Catholics.

Please see this information about name-calling, taken from the rules sticky at the top of this forum:
Clarification of rules regarding name-calling:
  • Insulting another member by calling that person a “prot,” “fundie,” “radtrad,” “heretic,” or anything else is not permitted on these boards. This rule will be rigorously enforced.
  • Use of slang or shortened terms to refer to non-Catholic groups in a derogatory fashion (e.g., prot, fundie, etc.) is not permitted on these boards. This rule will be rigorously enforced.
  • The only exception to this rule is that “radical Traditionalist” or “ultra-Traditionalist” may be used to identify segments within the Traditional Catholic movement. Such terms may not be used in a derogatory fashion and may not be used to insult fellow members. This rule will be rigorously enforced.
If you have any questions or concerns about this, please contact the moderator of this forum by private message. Do not create public threads or posts to debate this. Thank you (source).
