You can’t just rely on religious education teachers or on sermons. You parents are teachers, just as our Mother the Church is our Teacher. Your home is the Church, a domestic Church, so be for your children what the Church is for you. Here are three reasons why you ought to teach children the Faith:
- Obedience. According to the Fourth Commandment, you must instruct, correct, guide, and be good examples for your children. That is your parental duty as a parent. Teach your children the Faith, and you will be obedient to God, you will be showing your love of Him, and through you your children will see God’s immense and powerful love for them.
- Formation. If you don’t teach your children the Faith, don’t expect them to know it. In a world that considers sin natural, they will learn to consider sin natural. And if they should later learn the truth, they will reject it, because they believe that everyone sins, so it must be natural and not evil. You are your children’s first refuge, first comfort, and first helpers.
- Faithfulness. Obey God and your children will obey you. Teach them about the Faith and they will live by the Commandments of the Lord. A son followers his father and a daughter followers her mother. This is so evident in everyday life that I don’t think I need to expand on it. Suffice it to say, the measure of love you plow is the meausure of love you reap.
