One in a while, our priest will invite the congregation to join him in singing: through Him, with Him, and in Him, etc. I believe this is an abuse, and I don’t join in, although most people do. Am I right or wrong?

You are right - the people are not to chant the doxology only the AMEN

Instruction Concerning Worship of the Eucharistic Mystery

Sacred Congregation for the Sacraments and Divine Worship
4. It is reserved to the priest, by virtue of his ordination, to proclaim the Eucharist Prayer, which of its nature is the high point of the whole celebration. It is therefore an abuse to have some parts of the Eucharist Prayer said by the deacon, by a lower minister, or by the faithful.(16) On the other hand the assembly does not remain passive and inert; it unites itself to the priest in faith and silence and shows its concurrence by the various interventions provided for in the course of the Eucharist Prayer: the responses to the Preface dialogue, the Sanctus, the acclamation after the Consecration, and the final Amen after the Per Ipsum. The Per Ipsum itself is reserved to the priest. This Amen especially should be emphasized by being sung, since it is the most important in the whole Mass

Many priests in the 70s and after “encouraged” the congregation, especially if the Mass was being sung, to “join in”. I’m sure they had very good intentions (for the “community”). And we know that “good intentions” are used for, right?

Sometimes I do get very tired of having these abuses, like the “orans”, the “hand-holding at the Our Father”, the offering of the Body and Blood to the EMHC’s BEFORE the priest receives, the “applause” for cantors and “music ministers”, which go ON and ON with no relief. The guidelines for all these practices are clear and explicit and readily available not only to the priest but to the laity, but we are so BROWBEATEN that we think that, heavens no, we can’t ask people to STOP abusing because then WE’ll be abusing THEM somehow by daring to judge them, yadda yadda yadda.

But what do we expect? Most Catholics aren’t obedient to ANYONE, especially God. Obey the Pope’s Humanae Vitae? It offends our individualism. Obey the bishops? Which one–they act independently of each other, the Pope, and GOD HIMSELF. Obey your husband? How degrading? Obey your parents? How outrageous?

Even the “obey your thirst” campaign is doing poorly. Nobody wants to obey ANYONE. 😃

I love Frank Sinatra, but I feel that there are a whole lotta “Catholics” who think that their official church song is “I did it MY WAY.”
