Throwing a bachelor party for a friend, looking for any suggestions you might have.

He’s a recent Catholic convert, and as we (and most of the groomsmen) share the faith, obviously ruling out strip clubs, etc. The groom is relishing the idea of it being a surprise. He has no particular preferences, but he’s not outdoorsy, so the groomsmen and I have ruled out camping, etc.

We’re all very excited for him, and he’s a very good guy: giving back much to the Church and community, developing a chaste relationship, etc. So we definitely think he’s worthy of an awesome celebration!

Any thoughts?

I would rule out drinking anything stronger than light beers. Otherwise, things naturally will degrade and get less appropriate.

How about telling the guys to bring some cigars or maybe their favorite tobacco pipes and you could all have a poker game? Maybe throw in some football.

Normally bachelor parties are not appropriate. Therefore, I would do anything that would encourage good Catholic manliness not anything crude or contrary to morals.

I’ve been to a couple and they were good. But yeah, we mostly agree with you on that point.

However, we can’t help but laugh at the absurdity of it all. What I mean by that is that so often people have frivolous and immoral celebrations for frivolous and immoral reasons. Yet here we are in a situation which is so very worthy of celebration and yet people would say not to celebrate that.. We are proud of our friend for living a chaste and generous lifestyle and for choosing such a great woman who lives likewise. Why do people think that being a good man means one must always comport oneself in a dour way? I think, to be honest, if we do not celebrate this man, my friend, for what he has chosen to do, and for how he has lived his life… what a failure that would be, in my opinion. 👍
Therefore, I would do anything that would encourage good Catholic manliness not anything crude or contrary to morals.
Can you help me understand what you mean by “good Catholic manliness” and how would I know if something did or did not encourage that? Thank you!

How about dinner at a steak house followed by a poker game.
Good ones for sure. I think we are very likely to do something like that. But we’re also thinking about doing something else, in addition, that is a bit of a novelty…perhaps something that we’ve never done before. So maybe it would be like this: a game of football (or poker) during the afternoon, dinner and drinks in the evening, and then some kind of unique event or activity late at night. I’m not saying for sure that’s the direction we’ll go, but it’s possible.

Thank you for your ideas 👍

Do you live where there’s a place like, “Dave and Busters”?

Also, check your community calendar for any events the day of the party.

Do you live near water? Float trip, etc.

Hot air balloon ride?

**Too bad the husband to be doesn’t like the outdoors much. My son was best man for his best friend, and told the bride to be that there wouldn’t be anything disrespectful to her done, but that the bachelor party was going to be a surprise, and that it would last the whole weekend. She trusted my son and said she didn’t need to know where they were going or what they would be doing and that she knew my son would take care of her future husband.

So on the Friday, my son picked his friend up and met the rest of the guys and they had a really nice dinner, then they went to a comedy club. They crashed on the floor at the house of one of the guys that night. Then they got up early on Saturday and went to the ocean. They set up the tents all in one spot. They played football and volleyball on the beach, boogie boarded, a few of them fished, and they just horsed around all day. That night they sat down around the campfire and BBQ’D their dinner, and did the drinking/talking/bonding thing. It was great because no one had to drive anywhere, when someone got sleepy they just got into their tent and went to sleep. On Sunday they all went skydiving for the first time.

The whole group still talks about how great that bachelor party was and that it was the best one any of them had ever been to… and nothing bad or disrespectful happened.

There are ways to do a less expensive version of something like this, but the guy needs to go outdoors ! :D**

Ever watched the Hangover series? 😉

In all seriousness, try a barbecue. It’s outdoors but laid back.

Obviously unique events depend on where your location and budget. We arranged a trapeze lesson for my mate’s stag, but it was expensive even with the group discount. Someone here suggested water; you could spend the weekend by the beach, if you’re up for it.

I know you said no camping, but do you have any easy camping sites nearby? I remember camping with my family and a group of guys were having their bachelor party at the campsite next to us. They basically sat around the campfire drinking and talking. It was, I remember thinking, the kind of tame bachelor party that I would want my husband to have. It was campsite near a town. I think they had pizza delivered, there were bathrooms right there; it was pretty much as un-camping as camping can be. I’d look into that.

Not to knock Catholic manliness or sobriety, but stags are meant to be fun as well. Provided that the enviornment’s safe there should be no harm in stronger drinks.

Not being “outdoorsy” doesn’t mean you can’t go on some sort of adventure! Look for chartered or guided trips… this may be a great opportunity to at least have some sort of exciting trip that he wouldn’t normally go do on his own!

Yes, we’ve got a couple in the area. That’s a good thought—D&B or something like it.
Also, check your community calendar for any events the day of the party.

Yes, we live on an island. 🙂

Maybe kayaking is a thought, as long as we don’t spend the whole day outside, maybe just a few hours! 👍
Hot air balloon ride?
Ooooh crazy. I like it.

Not that I’m aware of, but that does sound kinda cool.

Yeah I tend to agree.

Still curious as to hearing more about what “Catholic manliness” is though.

Thanks everyone for all the suggestions

As someone mentioned earlier, check out local events happening that day.
Kidnap him for the day-weekend to make it a fun surprise.
  • Skydiving
  • Paintball
  • Bowling
  • Sporting event
  • Golf
  • Fishing
  • Racetrack
  • Water Rafting
  • Shooting Range
  • Casino (Poker)
  • Football
  • Grilling
  • Crash on the beach for a night.

I don’t know how he would feel about this buy my husband and I did a joint party. If we had divided up our friends by gender I would have had one attendee and my friends girlfriends who I don’t have much in common with. If we had divided up friends based on whose they were first, I would have had a huge party and hubby would have had 3 people attend. (Most of his friends have moved out of our city.) We got a party bus and did dinner and bar hopping as a huge group together. It was a night to remember and everyone said it was the best jack/jill party they had ever been to.

If the groom and/or bride wouldn’t go for that there’s always BBQ, going to an amusement park, water park, paintballing, casino, bowling, lazer tag, etc. The sky is the limit.

I also applaud you for the no strip club policy. Even before we planned the joint party we knew that strip clubs were a no go for both of us. Heck, his best man even pulled him aside right from the start and said “Hey, I don’t know what you have in mind but if you want strippers I can’t plan that and I won’t go”. Hubby just laughed and told him that there was a reason he was chosen for best man.

I haven’t read through all the responses so I may be duplicating, but here are some things that I think would be fun – if I were a guy:D
  • Go to a football game – football season is right around the corner (unless that’s too far away)
  • Go to a great steak house – maybe one that you would not normally go to because it’s a bit pricier.
  • Have a poker night
  • Go away for the weekend – does the group like to play golf? Find a resort that’s all inclusive and hang out for the weekend just doing nothing
Just find something that the group likes to do and have fun!!!

Is he into watching sports? For my brother’s bachelor party, they tailgated and went to a Phillies game.

Of course it depends on the guy, but I’ve always been fond of laser tag and go-karting. 🙂 That’s what I did when I threw my brother’s bachelor party.

My DH has attended several that were dinner+ drinks at a restaurant microbrewery or winery, then LAN party at one of the guys houses. He’s also done some that were at golf courses, video games all night (guys brought over different consoles/tv’s), fishing, rifle ranges, and those small race track places.

Find out the grooms hobbies, and design something around that 🙂

My husband’s bachelor party was actually a movie and drinks.
There was a movie he really wanted to see, but the release date was the date of the wedding, so I got them tickets for an early premiere the day before. Turns out it was a great idea for guys like them, they had a great time and they were happy because they were among the first people who saw it. I married a nerd. 😃

Wow, you all came up with some amazing ideas! Goes to show you, there are plenty of wild things to do without strippers and such. 🙂
