Thurs Mass readings / commentary (St Paul speaks in the synagogues / Did Transubstantiation have something to do w/ Judas’ betrayal?)

April 29, 2010
Thursday of the Fourth Week of Easter

Acts 13:13-25

From Paphos, Paul and his companions
set sail and arrived at Perga in Pamphylia.
But John left them and returned to Jerusalem.
They continued on from Perga and reached Antioch in Pisidia.
***On the sabbath they entered into the synagogue and took their seats. ***
After the reading of the law and the prophets,
the synagogue officials sent word to them,
“My brothers, if one of you has a word of exhortation
for the people, please speak.”

So Paul got up, motioned with his hand, and said,
“Fellow children of Israel and you others who are God-fearing, listen.
***The God of this people Israel chose our ancestors
and exalted the people during their sojourn in the land of Egypt. ***
With uplifted arm he led them out,
and for about forty years he put up with them in the desert.
When he had destroyed seven nations in the land of Canaan,
he gave them their land as an inheritance
at the end of about four hundred and fifty years.
After these things he provided judges up to Samuel the prophet.
Then they asked for a king.
God gave them Saul, son of Kish,

a man from the tribe of Benjamin, for forty years.
Then he removed him and raised up David as their king;
of him he testified,
***I have found David, son of Jesse, a man after my own heart;
he will carry out my every wish. ***
From this man’s descendants God, according to his promise,
has brought to Israel a savior, Jesus.
John heralded his coming by proclaiming a baptism of repentance
to all the people of Israel;
and as John was completing his course, he would say,
‘What do you suppose that I am? I am not he.
Behold, one is coming after me;
I am not worthy to unfasten the sandals of his feet.’”

Ps 89:2-3, 21-22, 25
(2) For ever I will sing the goodness of the Lord.
or:
R. Alleluia.
The favors of the LORD I will sing forever;
through all generations my mouth shall proclaim your faithfulness.
For you have said, “My kindness is established forever”;
in heaven you have confirmed your faithfulness.
R. For ever I will sing the goodness of the Lord.
or:
R. Alleluia.
“I have found David, my servant;
with my holy oil I have anointed him,
That my hand may be always with him,
and that my arm may make him strong.”
R. For ever I will sing the goodness of the Lord.
or:
R. Alleluia.
“My faithfulness and my mercy shall be with him,
and through my name shall his horn be exalted.
He shall say of me, ‘You are my father,
my God, the Rock, my savior.’”
R. For ever I will sing the goodness of the Lord.
or:
R. Alleluia.

Jn 13:16-20Gospel

When Jesus had washed the disciples’ feet, he said to them:
“Amen, amen, I say to you, no slave is greater than his master
nor any messenger greater than the one who sent him
.
If you understand this, blessed are you if you do it.
I am not speaking of all of you.
I know those whom I have chosen.
But so that the Scripture might be fulfilled,
The one who ate my food has raised his heel against me.
From now on I am telling you before it happens,
so that when it happens you may believe that I AM.
Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever receives the one I send
receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me.”

.

***Originally God didn’t wnat Israel to have any king but Him but they whined and got their way :D… only (of course) to be sorry for it later…

In the Gospel Jesus mentions the fact that the one who took Bread w/ Him raised his heel against Him… wonder if Transubstantiation had anything to do with Judas betraying Jesus? Does anyone know exactly WHY Judas did that? i know he was possessed… which i guess says it all… but apparently it doesn’t say it all to me cuz i am wondering if the reason he opened himself up to possession was that he didn’t believe in Transubstantiation… thought it was too “out there” and that maybe Jesus wasn’t who He said he was (cuz he thought Transubstantiation was too preposterous or whatever)?? hmmmm… :hmmm::coffeeread::hmmm::confused:***

From John 6 :70-71 we can see that Jesus reveals to the other apostles that Judas is a devil. Most likely Judas agreed with the disciples who asked “how can this man give us his flesh to eat?” and that eating the flesh and blood of Jesus was “a hard saying, who can listen to it?”
Judas was also stealing money from the apostles money box so he was a sinner.
There is debate as to whether or not Judas received the Eucharist at the Last Supper. It seems to me that he left before the consecration which would make sense because Jesus told Judas that it would have been better if he had never been born. For Judas to receive the Eucharist in mortal sin would have gone against the teachings of Christ that Paul relates to us 1 Cor.11:27
I would say that Bread of life discourse in John 6 is what led Judas to betray Christ.

i dont think he did because somehwere it says that Jesus told them which one would betray them by “the one who has dipped his bread…” or something like that…

i tend to agree… and weird thing is… .been Catholic all my life… catechized for the last 11 yrs or so… studying this and reading that about the Church, daily mass as often as possible… and yet i just now saw that this might be the case…

something happened to me recently that made me see all the more clearly how much we need Jesus… we all need HIm whether we wnt to admit it or not… whether we believe in Him or not… makes no diffrnc (except that those who dont know Him need Him al the more)

and if we need HIm… we need His Church… the sacraments… the Mass

i wish i could get this across to certain people… to all pepole… but some just dont get it and act like they dont wnat to get it:(

The Gospel of Luke has the consecration of the bread and wine in 22:19-20 and then in verse 21 Luke records “but behold the hand of him who betrays me is with me on the table”. That makes it appear that Judas received the Eucharist.
However in the other Gospels it appears that Judas left before the consecration because immediately after the apostles took the Eucharist they sung a hymn and went to the Mount of Olives where Judas would later come with the Roman soldiers.
So which gospel is correct? One thing to noticed about Luke’s Gospel is that he does not write in chronological order. For example in Luke 3:20 he has John the Baptist in prison from which he was never released yet in verse 21 he writes about Jesus who was baptized by John.
Luke is clearly writing our of chronological order which, some believe, is what happens in his account of the Last Supper.

hmm… i dont kow what to say… but its these kinds of contradictions that make pepole turn from Christianity… or never go there in the 1st place …so glad i know that the Church came b4 the written Word of God… and put toghether the NEw T… so glad that i have the Real Presnece which keeps me with Jesus … because the written Word alone would do nothing but confuse me… would and DOES… all the time… but whne i think of the Real Presence and the Mass, all doubts disappear … 🙂
