Ten years ago, Time Magazine did a report on the assets of the LDS Church, titled “Mormons Inc.” It supports, and may even be the source, of the numbers being given by returninghome.

The LDS Church has a vast financial empire, and they continue to grow it.

Yep, that’s exactly the article I was working from, written by S.C. Gwynne and Richard Ostling, SLC, UT. I actually have the original magazine I found when it was current.

I’d like to see an updated version of the article since the church has likely acquired that much more property and wealth in the subsequent decade.

Thank you RebeccaJ. I just didn’t want ReturningHome to get into trouble. You gave a perfect example of “citing a source.”

Yes, normally I’m good about that but since most of that is public information anyway, I didn’t this time.

SirThomasMore,

I’m actually trying to help. Please see Forum Rules: forums.catholic-questions.org/showthread.php?t=2

#3 of Forum Content Rules: “Discussion of a controversial news event must reference at least one publicly-available news report on the subject. This can be in the form of a link, a partial quote and a link, or a posted photo (as appropriate).”

I understand. But typically, with citing, one does not have to cite what is common knowledge. It is common knowledge that there are millions of LDS. I think Diana even posted the number. It is common knowledge that they require tithing or you can;t get to the highest level of Joe’s heaven. So, it is simple math at that point. If the average income of each Mormon is 15,000.00 per year (very low, but a lot of LDS live in Latin America), then the tithing would be 1,500.00 per person. If there are 13,000,000 LDS and only 40% pay tithing, that is over 5 million Mormons paying tithing. If 5 million Mormons each pay 1,500.00…that is more than my 8 place calculator can handle. My Iphone 4 calclator says it is 7.5e+9…whatever that means…not sure if that is billion or trillion…I went to law school because I can’t do math…

regardless, it did not require a cite

Yeah, it’s changed.

Deseret Mgt. has done a lot of restructuring of its companies. The LDS church is now investing in residential development, not just in their $2 billion project in downtown SLC. There is also economic changes, where Ben Life lost a lot of money.

Yes, and when one thinks of the grocery stores that are LDS owned here in Utah and the involvement with the medical industry (hospitals etc) it is truly a cash cow. Not to mention Marriott…

I was thinking yesterday that Catholics should think more along these lines - imagine how many charities we could support with the tithing from grocery chains, medical insurance, hotels…it is truly a brilliant idea. I think almost every grocery store here in Utah (except Smith’s/WalMart/Target) are LDS owned.

Also, some very successful food chains/franchises that are locally owned (Cafe Rio?) might be LDS. Basically, every time we do business with any of these hotels/restaurants/stores WE are giving 10% to the Mormon church.

Thus saith the Lord…Thou shalt increase-eth the profit margin…😛

Ok, serious question, and it is actually topic related…😃

If the “First Presidency” issues a signed letter on a particular issue, and directs it to be read at, and to all, congregations, is he speaking as a “prophet”?

Does it still have to say “Thus Saith the Lord” in order to be considered valid in some way?

Unsupported claims? Hardly.

Let’s assume that the church’s claims of having 13 million members is correct. And let’s then assume that only half of all members tithe properly. We’re now talking about 6.5 million members tithing 10% of their income. With high-visibility members like Gladys Knight, Steve Young, Mitt Romney, Orrin Hatch, the Osmond family, Glen Beck, Orson Scott Card, Stephen Covey, and Stephenie Meyer, we’re already talking about a lot of theoretical capital. Odds are that being in the public eye, the pressure is on them to tithe their proper amounts.

While the church has been able to hide what it makes as income from tithing, its publicly traded church-owned companies have to report theirs. As of 1996, the church owned 16 radio stattions, one television station (FCC rules forbid owning more than one), the largest beef ranch in all of America (Deseret Ranch in Orlano, FL, the land alone is valued at $858 million), the Polynesian Cultural Center in Hawaii (annual revenue of at least $40 million), AgReserves and ArgriNorthwest farms and ranches, BYU (Provo, Hawaii, and Jerusalem) and Ricks (ID) college campuses, and of course the other Deseret companies that produce clothing, food, and printed products. We also have the dozens of church-owned historical sites that generate money through admissions, donations, and gift sales like the gift shop at the base of Hill Cumorah, places that the Smith family lived or owned, the Carthage jail, or other sites significant to church history.

We’re talking about assets valued at well over 30 billion dollars and an annual income somewhere north of $5.9 billion dollars and that’s without counting any tithing income. My estimates of ‘tens of millions of dollars of unreported income’ are likely well below their actual numbers, but we’ll never really know since the church managed to deceive the US government into thinking it was a legitimate religion.
Even though they are a 'tax exempt" organization, I believe they still have to file some sort of tax information with the Federal government.

Couldn’t someone obtain a copy of that from the IRS through the Freedom of Information Act?

No.

Tax filings are private.

But we hear about this president, and that president’s tax return, and how much they paid in taxes, as part of the FOIA.

I was just searching some info on the FOIA, and it doesn’t appear churches are expempt.

judicialwatch.org/files/documents/2009/FOIAHandbook12032009.pdf

According to this website, there are 9 exemptions, and I didn’t see tax exempt organizations listed.

I think I might just call the IRS…hmmmmm

I think in the situation of a President, they voluntarily release them, it’s not FOIA, but I could be wrong.

As I understand it, tax filings are private, and there are huge penalties for anyone with the IRS that makes a disclosure of private tax information.

OK, just got off the phone with the IRS, and I only got transfered once in order to get the answer. WAY TO GO!!!

Yes, a portion of a churches tax records could become available through the Freedom of Information Act, if they filed a “990 return”.

Not all such organizations are required to file a 990 return, but if they do, it can be obtained through the FOIA.

It is described on pages 4 and 5 of the document, that can be found here:

irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i990.pdf

She also went on to explain that if a church had employment related taxes for employees, then that would have to be filed.

So, if a church owned ABC theater, they would have to declare income on that.

From what the lady at the IRS told me, the only thing that couldn’t be disclosed is the amount that is received via donation, tithing, that sort of thing.

It looks like I need to take you out for a steak dinner at the Chop House. I never thought of pursuing this.
