Hi Everyone,
Being a newbie to the forums, I’m just wondering what the terms Tiber Swim team and Hook, Line and Sinker stand for. I’ve seen them used with people’s signatures on the forums.
Thanks for helping me out on this!
In Christ,
Jennifer

The Tiber is the river that runs through Rome. So someone that has “swum the Tiber” is someone who has converted to Catholicism. Someone that will sign their post Tiber Swim Team 2002 is someone that came into the Church in 2002. Hope that helps.

I will wait for someone else on the hook line and sinker meaning. I have an idea, but someone else probably knows for sure.

“Tiber Swim Team” means the person is a convert. The Tiber River runs outside of Rome, and Caesar, returning to Rome after having been exiled, crossed it while re-entering to take it over. Changing one’s mind on a significant matter has since come to be called “crossing the Tiber”. Because it is about Rome, among Catholic converts it has taken on the meaning of converting to Roman Catholicism.

I’m not sure about Hook Line and Sinker. I’ve not seen that one.

Okay, I was wondering if it might have to do with conversion. Thanks! I can’t wait to learn about the Hook, Line and Sinker group–I’ll try to find the thread where I saw it.

Hook, Line and Sinker Club is someone who accepts everything about the Catholic Church “Hook Line and Sinker”

It was kind of a Tongue in Cheek thing started on this thread:

forums.catholic-questions.org/showthread.php?t=251508

to quote:

"When I come to the Judgment Day I would rather say, “Well, Lord, I’m sorry, I guess I took it all in, hook, line, and sinker. Yep, I believed it all: transubstantiation, infallibility of the pope, the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin, incorrupt saints, stigmata, bleeding statues. I was taken in by the whole lot, and I hope you’ll forgive me for being gullible.” I’d rather say that than, “I’m sorry, I didn’t believe. I was skeptical. I was cynical. I doubted. I spent more time trying to find out what wasn’t true than discovering what was true.”

I think hook, line, and sinker refers to completely “falling” for the truth of the Catholic Church. 😉 I’ve seen it here and there, though I can’t remember which section the thread was in…hopefully somebody else can bump it and/or share more. 😃
