Pope Francis’s visit to Washington is months away, but already it’s causing some of the most ardent followers of the Holy See’s head to flirt with one of the top-10 taboos — the one about not coveting.

Tickets to the pope’s addresses — he’s leading an open-air mass at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception on Sept. 22, then addressing a joint session of Congress the following day — are already in demand, and they’re not even available yet.

The March speech before Congress by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu might have been, as a spokesman for House Speaker John Boehner told The New York Times, as big a draw as if “Taylor Swift and Katy Perry did a joint concert at Madison Square Garden wearing white-and-gold and black-and-blue dresses, accompanied by dancing sharks and llamas.” But the globally famous pope’s appearance in the House chamber? Think Beyonce and Kim Kardashian wearing naked dresses in George and Amal’s living room while Keyboard Cat plays a duet with a dad bod.

Hill offices are already fielding calls from constituents eager to snag tickets. Even normally blase staffers are angling to get into the House chamber, though congressional leaders haven’t finalized ticketing plans yet. Over at the Basilica, 20-30 calls a day are streaming in.

Thanks for the update! I hope to go with my family!

“There’s tons of enthusiasm,” said spokeswoman Jacquelyn Hayes, who adds that the church hasn’t announced its own plan for the historic event, much less how it will distribute the sought-after spots. “It doesn’t matter how many people we could accommodate, because there will be more demand no matter what.”
Should be quite an event. I wish I could go. 😦

Monsignor Walter R. Rossi, rector of the National Shrine, states, “We are truly delighted that Pope Francis is following in the footsteps of his predecessors Saint Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI in visiting the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception during his apostolic visit to the United States. We are honored that the Holy Father will celebrate the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and canonize Blessed Junipero Serra, the first-ever canonization to take place on American soil.”
