Did Tim ever “debate” James White?

Before I get pounced on I want to say the following:

**Tim Staples is one of my favorite apologists. He played a HUGE part in bringing back to the faith from Protestantism. He continues to be one of my favorite apologists.

I have his tape in which he debates Calvary Chapel pastors. He did a superb job and easily refuted their claims. **

With that being said, I have to say that I have seen him debate James White years ago in Orange County, CA. No matter how much I like him and believe the Catholic Church is the one True Church… I would have to say he lost this debate. Not because what he was saying was untrue. Not because James White had valid arguments. But because of his tone and delivery at the time. He got overly upset and disruptive, and sometimes seemingly disrespectful. I overheard many Catholics who were displeased with the way he conducted himself during that debate.

Like I say, this was years ago. And I am sure he’s learned a lot about debating since then. The Calvary Chapel tapes seem to suggest this, as he was **MUCH better. **

I have been fortunate to hear Tim Staples talk on numerous occasions in person and have had short chats with him after or during breaks.

On a weekly basis, I was many times able to go to his lectures and debates in the meeting room of the Catholic Resource Center, which is associated with St. Joseph’s Communications. Twice our then-pastor a few years ago invited Tim to give his 6-week talks on Mary. These were very good.

Have gone to the annual National Catholic Family Conference many times at the Long Beach Convention Center. Tim would be there along with many other great speakers. He was one of the favorites people would flock to hear him talk.

I have seen him debate James White on the Papacy. He was great! As usual, James White tried to switch subjects when he felt cornered and went even as far to insulting the Holy Eucharist and all Catholics in the audience. This was the first time (and only time, I believe) Tim debated James White. As the other posters have mentioned, Tim is very energetic, engaging and many times absolutely hilarious. I also like to compare him to a walking encyclopedia.

I have seen him and Jesse Romero - live - debate on radio some fundamentalist at Cal State Fullerton. That was a disaster, but not for Tim and Jess. The two of them just had a ball.

Weeks ago, I already heard from a friend who went to his weekly lectures that Tim had told his audience that he would go to Catholic Answers. A loss for St Joseph’s Communications, but a great gain for CA.

Would Tim admit to loosing the debate and loosing his cool I am sure he would and I am sure he has learned since that debate.

Yeah I see what you are saying… I have a hard time not getting frustrated with some of my own acquaintances. I’m not saying it’s an easy thing to do.
