Many people with asthma are very sensitive to perfume, cologne, or other fragrnced products. Members of my family have had asthma attacks in restaurants, hospitals, and our church because of their exposures to others’ fragrances. How can we make a fragrance-free mass a reality?

In occupation asthma problems, fragrance is amont the top causes of serious respiratory attacks. Why don’t we talk about this stuff?
You may want to take an informal survey of parishioners. If there is a substantial number of faithful who are also afflicted with this condition, perhaps your pastor would be willing to establish a “no fragrance” [NF] Mass. The first Mass of the day would be ideal because the worship space could be aired-out overnight.

There is a Canadian firm called Scintrex-Trace that manufactures a hand held device designed to detect trace amounts of both vapor and particulate materials. It has user programmable database that stores up to 1000 different target chemicals. All you have to do is determine which products or family of products you wish to exclude from the worship space, “sample” it into the device’s memory, and wala, you are prepared to detect it from up to 5.0 metres [indoors].

After completing the three-day operators-licensing course in Ottawa, a detection ministry of four volunteers could serve the needs of most parishes.

Just post a notice in the bulletin: “Some parish members are chemically sensitive and have health issues triggered by perfume. Your scent-free cooperation is appreciated.”
Chemical sensitivities can be from gut Candida overgrowth from antibiotic use as Candida makes toxic acetaldehyde: this can be detoxed only with the metabolized form of B-5, pantethine–which also lowers cholesterol. Consider asking your doctor for guidance and perhaps enjoy Mass more.

… because that makes perfect sense: spending gobs of money to establish scent-bouncers outside of mass.

Some people wear way too much perfume/cologne, and if it’s a problem at Mass, the priest should mention it. If people are not wearing too much, but it is just that *any *fragrance causes someone difficulty, they need to look into ways of adapting- they can’t expect everywhere they go to be fragrance free.

I do not see a fragrance free Mass ever happening. People have many different illnesses and difficulties. It is hardly possible to accommodate all allergies, illnesses and injuries. That is even assuming it is a problem. In fifty years of attending Mass and Church services, I have never seen on asthma attack at Church.
