Time Limit for Penance

There is none, but the penance must be completed within a reasonable time. A good rule of thumb is, “as soon as possible.”

If you haven’t fulfilled your penance by the time of your next Confession, just mention it.

I once had a very difficult penance spanning three weeks, so much so that I found it impossible to do. So I went to Confession and asked Father Confessor to commute it.

Penance should be done as soon as possible but remember absolution is not conditional upon the penance being done. If you forget or even deliberately do not fulfill the penance you are still forgiven.

This is true, but unless I am mistaken to deliberately omit one’s pennance is itself a mortal sin (against obedience). Thus, the sin for which the pennance was given would be forgiven, but the penitent would be in the same boat as he or she was before! 🙂

Check with your priest. Deliberately not doing penance is not a mortal sin.
 
One of the most frustrating things for me, when our OCDS group had a day of reconciliation, was that one person, and it was always the same person, who maneuvered herself to be first in line, took up the entire time slot that was alloted for confession. She was the only person that go to go. The rest of us, were left out of receiving the sacrament. After that, I always made sure I went to confession at my home parish. When the day of reconciliation came, I didn’t have to bother going to confession.

Occasionally this same sort of thing happens at my parish, were one person will eat up almost the entire time slot for confessions.

I have been the guy who lets a couple go ahead of me and then they take so much time that I am left out. So I am torn between letting some people go ahead of me, and rushing to get to the front of the line. There is an art of making it look like you are not rushing to get to the front of the line and being patient and allowing others to go ahead.

What do you do Jim, when an old lady is walking slowly to the line and you can get ahead of her or you can walk slower. I want to go to confession sometimes in my parish except the priest is only available for about 20 minutes before Mass, it is difficult to not get in the way of other people.

(I usually end up going to confession at another parish as they have a resident priest who is much more available) We have no priest in my parish.
