Do you think the Church started with the birth of Christ or the death of Christ?
What does the Catholic church teach and what does the scripture say as I have not studied this but have been reading a lot about bible codes lately?

If the Church started in 33 AD , then the end of the first milenniun would have been about 1033 AD and the second will be 2033 AD.

A lot happened in 1033 and what will happen in 2033?

🙂 I have a feeling I’m going to be buying more books.🙂 Dessert

Going by the accounts in the bible, it would have started sometime between 30 and 33 AD, with Jesus telling Peter ‘you are the rock, and on this rock I build my church’ – there establishing him as the first pope.

But we still number years by an approximation of the Christ’s birth, so the end of the first millennium was still in 1000-1001 AD 😉

Although I have always understood the birth of the Church to be the day of Pentecost, I recently heard a talk by Scott Hahn which mentioned the moment that the water and blood flowed from Christ’s side as the actual moment that the Church was born.

Food for thought. :tiphat:

It would seem to me that when the head of the Catholic Church was born, the Church would be born with Him ??

It would seem to me, since the Catholic Church is the body of Christ, and Christ has always existed, even priolr to the incarnation, the Catholic Church has always existed. The Son of God was not “created” at the conception or at the birth of Jesus, He has always been.

the Catholic Church has always existed
🙂 I thought of that as well, in terms of Theology and Understanding etc, the Church has always existed.

Christ was actually born in about 4 BC though.
Minor nit… 4 BC is latest that Christ could have been born because that is the year that Herod died. It is, however plausible that the was born a year or two earlier (Didn’t they spend two years in Egypt?). And Herod also ordered all male Children 2 and under to be killed. Since we don’t know exactly how long Jesus stayed in Bethlehem, it seems possible that Jesus may have been born as early as 6-8 BC.

The NT Church began in some sense at Pentecost - Calvinists (surely rightly) emphasise the genetic continuity between the NT Church & what they call the OT Church; i.e., the People of God under the Old Covenant. Some of the Fathers even speak of “the Church since Adam”. Add the doctrine of election in St.Paul, & it becomes possible to speak of the Church “chosen before the foundation of the world”.

Don’t waste your time on that “Bible Code” stuff - it’s intellectually worthless; the method used allows one to find anything one cares to: “Donald Duck shot Elvis” is probably in there somewhere. Michael Drosnin predicted a nuclear catastrophe for 2006 - as was obvious would happen even before the year dawned, nothing of the kind took place. Rule of thumb - if X is predicted, X will not happen 🙂
