Time Magazine, U.S. Edition, current issue (dated April 11, 2016)

Advisory Warning: indecent images appear on the magazine cover and the title page of the article. These images are blurry and/or photo-processed for obscurity, but still recognizable as pornography.

Online access (link provided here) free only to subscribers, others would have to pay.

The cover article is about porn. Of course, I would expect an article in Time to avoid religion and morality, but I thought at least it would delve into the effects of porn on sexuality, relationships, culture, and society, and perhaps acknowledge the existence of religion and morality.

Nope. Sad to say, the article is mainly concerned with the plight of many young men who grew up with unlimited, free, online porn and now are experiencing low libido and erectile dysfunction. The article highlights a few of these young men who are sounding the alarm and speaking out against porn… but only because it prevents them from enjoying sex. It seems that they are concerned about nothing more than their own pleasure and prestige.

What a disappointment, that the article — and these young men — can reach no higher, can see no farther, than the self. What a heartbreaking (and frightening) testimony it gives of the self-absorption that has become a false god.

Try to relax. The fact that these young men are realizing that something is wrong is good. The other good news is that avoiding online porn is a good thing. Any good news is good news. And those who have tried to justify the problem now know there is, in fact, a problem.

Pray for them. Porn has become the new opiate of the masses. Decreasing its appeal and outlining real-world consequences may help others to think twice and say no.

The fact that Time made this a cover story lends a strong voice to the real struggle being experienced when young minds are exposed to images their minds cannot process without creating problems.

I actually thought when I opened the link to this topic that the article was just going to discuss pornography as a normal part of sexual expression. While it would have been nice for the article to discuss the negative aspects of porn on marriages (or at least intimate relationships), I agree with Ed, that it’s good that the negative aspects of porn are being discussed, even from a secular perspective.
