OK, this one struck me as hilarious, and I’m not even Catholic (yet). I’ve just heard a church advertisement the local evangelical radio station. This phrase nearly caused me to laugh myself to death: “Come join us at St. Paul Lutheran Church, where we present timeless Lutheranism in modern clothing.” Timeless? I guess history started in the early 16th century 😉

Surely you remember St. Paul nailing the letter to the Hebrews to the Temple doors.

:rotfl: That was my laugh for the day! Good one!

And I was told that Aspies don’t have a sense of humor… you and my daughter have proven that to be false… 🙂

But it’s often a **very strange ** sense of humor. The Jack Chick thread has some more examples of genuine aspie humor. And not all of it comes from aspies. 🙂

And how does “A Mighty Fortress” sound in Aramaic?

Y’all be nice.

John Wesley (Methodist) used to say “Not a new religion do we preach, but the old religion of the Bible.” He knew that Methodism per se began with him and his friends in college, but he considered it to be the truth–and truth is timeless.

And Lutherans, of course, believe their doctrine to be true.

Pray tell, what is an Aspie?

who was going to post some remark here about “timeless Lutheranism” meaning that you checked your watch at the door …

Well, dj beat me to that great link on AS!

“…checked your watch at the door.” Pretty good. 😃

Kevan: Yes, you’re right about being nice. Mea maxima culpa. Sometimes the aspie in me needs a little kick. The OP just seemed an odd thing to the historian in me. “Timeless Christianity” would perhaps be a little less incongruous to me, if for no other reason than I’ve heard it before.

As a perusal of my posts reveals, I’m not into demonizing Lutherans or anyone else on a genuine search for Christ. We Christians, whatever our individual beliefs, have common enemies that seek to divide and destroy us. I certainly disagree with Luther on some very basic things, but I’ll march along to “A Mighty Fortress” anytime against the contemporary forces that attempt to degrade our humanity and to deny that we’re made in God’s image. It’s a great hymn, anyway. 👍

Pseudochristians like Jack Chick, however, are absolutely, unequivocally, fair game. 😃

Likewise, I’m not into criticizing anyone who’s genuinely Christian. I was remarking, however, that the Lutheran Church certainly isn’t timeless, considering the event that led to its formation happened a little less than 500 years ago. But you’re right - Christian truth is indeed timeless.

I keep getting images of Lake Woebegone, “the town that time forgot” and which is quite Lutheran.

Yes, I too find it hard to reconcile “timeless” with events which happened after the fall of the Eastern Empire.

If it’s timeless, why has it split into thousands and thousands and thousands of sects?

The average lutheran sect has the half-life of a tse-tse fly.

Also, I would suggest a timeless sect would not glom on to the fad of the day, such as the ongoing attempt of lutherans to ordain gay bishops.

Is this St. Paul’s Luth on Hayes at Canal? (well, where Canal used to be.) It really is funny, they had a pastor once who chased the devil out of the church with a vacuum cleaner (that was the Sunday the last of my family left.) :rotfl:

Seriously, “timeless Lutheranism” has to be the best oxymoron I’ve seen in a while. Sounds ABLAZE! ™ to me!

No, its the one in Trenton. Here’s the webpage: stpaul-trenton.org

The one you attended sounds like a real prize-winner. I’m not too far from Hayes & Canal, by the way 🙂

I never was a member at St. Paul’s in Sterling Heights, but my family was some of the founding members and it was the church my grandma said her first Christmas piece in 🙂 The last time I was there (at the old church) was for a funeral in 1986. It wasn’t long after that when the vacuum cleaner incident happened and the rest of my family left. I played volleyball and basketball there when I was a kid, but I was on the team from Richmond.

I just noticed a cousin of mine is a member. :o I also noticed that I know the deaconess of the spanish ministries. (But I still think that is the best oxymoron I’ve heard lately.)

Nothing to do with anything, but Saal Road is my claim to fame down there 😃 and I spend enough time down there.

Hey!?! You are all SOOO FUNNY!!
Have you heard the one about the Catholic priest and the altar boy?

Hit and run?

Forgetit, I think you should get your facts straight. Go and look up some statistics on paedophilia amongst the clergy of different denominations and then we’ll see who’s laughing (nobody… except perhaps for the devil).
