I am a recent college graduate and I have been discerning a vocation to religious life, as a sister. I truly feel like God is calling me to the life. I have visited a couple of communities and am praying for guidance as to where God wants me. Unfortunately, in the course of the last year, I have had some very serious upheavals with my family, whom I have been very very close to all my life. Emotionally I feel very scared, and unhappy, and although I’ve made efforts, I just can’t seem to resolve things between us. I am very torn right now, because I feel like I am in a state of limbo. I feel like I can’t apply to a community until some of these things are resolved, while at the same time, I want to get my life started, if you will.

I suppose it all truly comes down to His timing for my life, but if you have any advice it would be warmly welcomed!

If you feel that other life issues would distract you from discerning and living a religious life, then it is probably best to try and resolve what you can first. If God is calling you to a religious life, then giving Him as most of your undivided attention as you can is best. I’m pretty sure God understands how complicated our lives get sometimes (as long as you weren’t for example using it as an excuse to hold off indefinitely or to shove Him aside).

If you have a spiritual director then it would probably be good to discuss this with them too.
