Some of us have a constant high pitched ringing in our ear. It is called Tinnitus. For me it is usually not noticed in the course of my day since there are so many other sounds and things to get my attention.

But alone in the chapel it is by far the dominant sound and thing in my head. It is an annoying incessant bother. So I try to just let it be. So far I do not see any spiritual value to it. it woul dbe so nice to hear real silence.

Have you been to a Dr to discuss this condition?

Sorry you’re dealing with this, OP. That has to be very annoying. My dh also has this, but he is able to just ignore it…or perhaps it’s just not progressed enough to really bother him yet.

Our adoration chapel has a white noise machine that we always turn on during our holy hour, as there is a very noisy Mass going on in the attached church during our scheduled time. Perhaps something like that would help block the ringing in your ears when you are in the chapel?

Saying a prayer for you.

I hear ya, and the incessant ringing. I offer it up as suffering. I ask for the intersession of Fr Paul of Moll since he could not heal afflictions of the ear while amongst mortals. I believe he has interceded on my behalf. I’m not cured but the volume has been greatly diminished. I encourage everyone who reads this to research Fr Paul of Moll.
God Bless you.

I’ve had it for 20+ years. It sounds cliched, but you learn to ignore it even when there’s silence. In the chapel, do some things, such as read a book, look around, etc. and you’ll notice that you don’t notice it unless you do notice it.

It is not so bad, so long as it does not get worse. Since I have also had vertigo i will talk to my Docv this thursdday about Ménière’s disease.

How are you going with it if you don’t mind me asking?
I have developed tinnitus out of nowhere this past month and am ongoing treatment at the doctor and probably going to get a referral to a specialist and don’t even want to think about how much this will cost me. Mine is getting worse and causing bad headaches.
I prayed for you and for others here with this condition too.
I hope we can have a cure but for now I am “offering it up”.

I suffer from Tinnitus too, but I listen to classical and religious music all day which masks the ringing. I have a ton of Gregorian Chant that is very meditative and contemplative.

LOVE! ❤️

Funny how sometimes worse than others. Mornings seem worse. Best to use music. Although when I am in the chapel in the evening I just listen to it and my attention to id fades.

A worse problem is becoming my vertigo. 1st episode last year in March. I was disappointed to get it again this year in February and then again Easter Sunday.
It seems to be the same ear.

My prayers are with you. I have tinnitus, too, so I understand. Most times, I am used to it, but other times, not so much.

:signofcross:

I’m sorry you are dealing with tinnitus. But I know the feeling since I’ve had a mild case (1 ear) for a little over one year. Like others have said, you can learn to tune it out in most cases, but some days are better than others.

My understanding is that many cases of tinnitus are caused by exposure to excessive noise. Although that was not the case with me, I do try to caution others to protect their hearing. I’m afraid many of the people listening to loud music on their I-Phones today will regret it some day.

So true!!!
Mine is from having my head slammed into my passenger door in an accident.
Middle and High C both ears.

I can tune myself!
😛
Seriously, it is annoying, though.

Have you had this checked out to rule out an underlying health condition?

I read last night St. Teresa of Avila had tinnitus and headaches most of her life so I guess she can be a Saint to pray to.

I have tinnitus too for years, worked around aircraft and electric motors which made similar noises, so I put myself in that same position in my imagination and I can endure, I try not to concentrate on the noise but accept it as my natural working environment. If we obsess about it, it can cause mental aggravation. It doesn’t stop me from praying. It sounds like the old TV with the signal in standby mode, high frequency. I accept it, Gods’ will.
