I had a discussion with this guy over fb groups and the topic was intercession of the saints. I did laid to him the arguments for intercession, can they hear us, prayers of righteous people, as well as quotes from revelation and some in 1 Timothy. But instead of refuting my arguments, he was just stuck with the question “where in the bible does it say that the disciple prayed to anyone other than God”. Everytime I give a new argument he just repost the phrase.

How do you deal with these kind of people who doesnt seem to look deeper into arguments you present but is fixed on his one faulty reasoning.

And more importantly, how do you exit the conversation without looking bad?

Thank you all in advance!

you can lead a horse to water, but you cannot make him drink.

If they refuse to be convinced, let them go. Dont waste your time. Pray for them.

I agree with you, but how do you manage those kind of situations? How do you exit the conversation?

'I have shown you logical, biblical arguments for x. You choose to not accept these. Therefore, I am wasting my time. May God bless you and enlighten you to the truth. I will pray for you."

Ask them questions like…where in the Bible does it say everything pertaining to our Faith has to be in the Bible? Jesus told us the final arbiter in disagreements…can you name it?

Part of being a good apologist involves knowing when to say when. Make the case for the faith, give three chances for a person to answer your questions if you asked them, and pray constantly, allowing the Holy Spirit to do His part. We plant the seeds. He converts hearts. And conversion sometimes takes a lifetime. Rarely (if ever?) have I heard/read someone say/write, “gee, Dave, you’re right about that and I am now going to give a closer look at what the Church teaches and consider the Catholic faith” after a discussion or several. However, I HAVE had someone, one time, after about 3 years following a discussion, re-approach me and ask for clarifications, more information on more topics, and eventually invited me to her confirmation. 🙂

What a great story! I hope it happens to me too! I do in all good intentions want to help this guy but he just doesn’t interact with my arguments and I sense that a nice exit will be the best decision. I don’t know, i think i’ve laid down all that needs to be said. The seed has been sown as we say. Let the Holy Spirit do the rest.
