I’ve been Lutheran and am now Evangelical but have been looking seriously at the Catholic church. In discussions with a former Catholic who still leans Catholic I started to research the different beliefs and practices of tithing and giving to a church. At evangelical churches we have attended we are routinely told to tithe or to work towards tithing and then to also give extra money once the first fruits giving have been met. This means the amount of money the church raises is significant. The former Catholic has mentioned that the way some churches ask and ask for more money and have gleaming facilities and dozens on staff to cover everything from music and various ministries bothers him. I did some quick research and it seems that the budget of a typical Catholic church is 40-50% than that of an evangelical one.
Having attended a Catholic church off and on I don’t ever recall a discussion on tithing but we are routinely asked for donations and to volunteer for various things. The parish festival just took place and raised a considerable amount of money and my wife asked what the point was, to which I responded to raise funds for the church and to bring the community in. Her next question was what do they use the money for. I told her for good causes.
So how does a typical parish use their donations, how is helping the poor completed when the giving seems less and if tithing is not required then how are funds raised to further the mission to go and disciple all nations?
