Tithing question

I wasn’t sure where to post this. In regards to supporting the church with tithing can anyone elaborate on if there is a rule or canon law rule about where the money should be sent. Example where should the money be properly distributed to the parish? To Catholic Charities? directly to ROME?

Is it OK to send my mondy to Another Parish?

The point is I am may find it troubling to send money to my local parish that is riddled with liturgical abuses and is overal quite dissenting…I would have to travel over 150 miles round trip to make my sunday obligation in finding a church that is not like mine.

No opinions please just some hard writtnen Rules like canon law or somthing.

there is no hard written rule on tithing, other than it is a law of the Church that Catholics contribute to the support of the Church. It does not specify how much, what percentage, how to pay it or who to give it to. Certainly it is prudent to withhold support from anyone within the Church who is acting against Church teaching and law.

The obligation to materially support the Church is expressed in the Catechism (2043) as:

“The faithful also have the duty of providing for the material needs of the Church, each according to his own abilities.”

with a reference to canon 222 which says:

§1. The Christian faithful are obliged to assist with the needs of the Church so that the Church has what is necessary for divine worship, for the works of the apostolate and of charity, and for the decent support of ministers.

Neither of those sources indicates a specific obligation to the local church, understood either as the parish or diocese. While the maxim “charity begins at home” would lead us to not entirely neglect giving to local ministries, especially the simple physical needs of the parish for Mass (bread, wine, candles, books, vestments, vessels, maintenance, utilities, etc.), you are not violating the precept by withholding support from disobedient or heretical ministries, even if these happen to be your own parish or diocese.

There definitely are no hard and fast rules about how much one should tithe. Supporting the Church on the other hand as was noted in a previous post (PP) is necessary.

Having said that - what is recommended at Parishes that do “Sacrificial Giving” is 10% of your pre-tax income with 5% to your local Parish (for upkeep as another PP said) and 5% to other Charitable organizations. My Parish is one of those “Sacrificial Giving” parish, we charge for nothing except materials in our Adult Classes and there is a charge for the use of the Church for a Wedding (this covers the cost of the lighting and heating, cleaning etc.) We are not pressured into the 10% (5/5 split) but to give what we can just so it hurts a little, hence the Sacrificial aspect of the Giving.

You do have to know that my Parish is very orthodox as is the Mission Parish I attend that is attached to it. God willing, we will have our own building by the end of the year this year and we will become a Sacrificial Giving Parish in our own right .

As far as giving to a Parish full of abuse yet the one you must attend because of distance etc. then be prepared to give what you feel is just for the material needs of the Parish and the rest of what you would normally give to whatever moral charity you wish to (including another Parish).

Brenda that is some good advice. I am very talented in construction, plumbing and electrical work. Perhaps I can just donate a significant amount of my time and expertise to the physical structure of the church. That way I know where my tithing is going and I will know that things are done correctly
