Is tithing the recommended form of giving to the lord, or simply the bare minimum?

Tithing is not required by the Catholic Church. Churches that do require it often regard this as a minimum and expect members to offer ‘free will’ offerings throughout the year.

I try to think of it this way:

A tithe [10%] was what was required to illustrate gratitude to God for His blessings upon the Jewish people … these blessings were freeing the people from captivity in Egypt, Manna from Heaven, etc … illustrated by Moses, the Law and the Prophets…

As Christians we are compelled to be joyful givers - thankful for the Blessings we have received from our God: thus we have Moses, the Law and the Prophets PLUS God Incarnate in the person of Jesus, the Sacraments - especialy the Eucharist - the True Heavenly Bread, the Church, Salvation, Eternal Life … and much much more …

We have so much more …Paraphrasing St Paul - “to whom much is given, much is expected” … Your gift should be from your heart, joyfully given in Thanksgiving to your Creator for the gift Jesus gave to you on the Cross - one that recognizes that everything you possess is God given …

It always seemed to me that 10% is a starting point … yet many Christians believe that since a specific percentage is not written - that means we can start at 0% and then perhaps progress to what we might have in our pocket that we haven’t already planned to spend at Starbucks on the way home from Church … or what we can give without impacting our lifestyle … like puchasing that new video game … They spend more on Pizza out each week then they give for the ‘family meal’ we experience each Sunday in the Eucharist … more for the IPOD or Movie Night then we feel compelled to share for hearing God’s word at the Liturgy of the Word on Sunday …

How much should you give? Enough such that you feel the gift - if it does not impact your budget - you have not given from your need but only from your surplus … Christ gave His all for you … Jesus gave His very Life for you … in the Garden - Jesus did not ask the Father how little He could gveto accomplish the plan of salvation … He gave Abundantly … for me … and for you …
