Is tithing (10% of your income) necessary for salvation? I know what the church teaches but have read some reponses on some threads that say otherwise. I know Protestants tithe but yet take abc, they strain the knat but swallow the camel. Most Catholics on here seem to believe in the 10% rule from the OT but disregard the other rituals like clothing, dietary and hygiene. I myself don’t give 10%, I fall in the 5-7% range. If 10% is required then do we have to pay back all the years that we didn’t tithe and is it considered mortal sin not reaching the 10% quota.

there is nothing in the bible or in Church law that requires Christians to tithe at a specific percentage or amount. What God does require is that we acknowledge all we have as gift from him and use it to further His kingdom. That includes using these gifts to carry out our vocation in life.

I have just had a discussion about tithing.

The person I was talking to said that most misunderstand what tithing is. I don’t recall all the details but basically they said that the tithe was what was given to the priest because they did not have land like the other tribes. So I would say that tithing has lost its reason for being.

To answer your question. Tithig is not necessary for salvation. We are obligated to help the poor and support the Church. The amount is not a set amount but what you are able to give. Remember the woman who gave from her want?

spencer2 & adrift & puzzleannie…
In the Old Testament and in the first eighteen hundred years of the New Testament… The CHURCH ran the Hospitals… the Schools… The Welfare System was through the Church!

Not until the last few hundred years did the Governments around the world take over this responsibility…
NOW… Today we pay TAXES… Far more then Ten percent!

We all pay at least 20% for these benefits to society!! Far more then the10% quota from the scriptures.!!
🙂

I personally find tithing impossible. That is 10% of your GROSS, not NET, income. After clothing and feeding the family, paying medical insurance, homeowners insurance, car insurance, bills, mortgage, tuition (that’s a biggie), taxes, taxes and more taxes… I don’t think we even have 10% left to give!!

I donate a LARGE portion of my time to the Church. Since time is money, I count myself as a tither. I don’t know if the Church sees it that way, but that’s the best I can do. If my salvation depends on my giving 10% of my gross income, then I’m on my way to hell…😉

Thanks for that info! Now I understand why tithing doesn’t make sense in today’s world.

Hello… I hope all well…
You said…

I reply…
FIRST:
Only God can see into each persons heart… no one can fool him! YES Give what you can afford… “Time, talent & Treasure”…

**SECOND: ** It would be a wise thing… For your children to see you contribute to the collection plate. They learn best by example… Seeing others GIVE, and maybe themselves adding a coin or two also to the Collection Plate, reinforces “Unity with the others”!

THIRD: You are NOT alone… I am sure there are other, like you or even worse off then you. IF…
If everyone did just as you… Then what?

LOVE: Is to give from the heart!!
This means… Don’t let your left hand know what your right hand is doing… (Don’t count your contribution as a loss) no matter how small; “Giving something is a good start”!

The Church truly is: “The Body of God”!
Who do you think you would be GIVING to,…if Not to Jesus?!
Not trying to lay the, Guilt Complex… just trying to make you look from a different angle!!

Well, as long as you aren’t my left hand, I guess I can let you in on what my right hand is doing. 👍 Just to set the record straight, I do, in fact, give monetarily to the church and my children do see me putting the envelope in the basket every week. I just don’t give 10% of our gross income. I happen to think it is unreasonable to expect 10% of someone’s gross income. My parish is a “tithing parish”, and as much as I adore my parish and the priests assigned to it, I think tithing is overly burdensome.

If everyone in the parish would participate by giving something (80% don’t even attend Mass, let alone support the parish monetarily), then there wouldn’t be the need to expect 10% from those who do participate.

Matthew 6:3
But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,

I agree sometimes it is hard to give… when so many others also have their hands out… Schools… Taxes … Utilities…Good causes…
