I wouldn’t say that. If Catholic marriage was made illegal by the government you would still do it and consider yourself married. They are as married as they need to be. The government does not make the marriage.
If government cannot make Catholics divorced and free to remarry in the church it takes a lot of nerve to issue edicts to this family. We don’t recognize divorce even though it’s issued by the government. 2nd marriages aren’t recognized if proper church procedures aren’t followed, even though the govt says they are properly married, so I like that comment, good one!

Why is that messed up? Because that’s outside your norm? I’m not saying they are right or wrong, I’m saying why are her feelings not valid?
Marriage is between ONE woman and ONE man.

Polygamy started because Young couldn’t stay true to his wife. Sounds like Cody has the same problem.
so are your children, so were mine. We are all immoral in one way or another…unless someone here has attained perfection, if that’s the case let me in on it.
Um, no, my child isn’t living in a household where I am skirting the law. They are. My child isn’t living in a household where we are openly living in sin AND broadcasting it. They are.

If you are or were, I am sorry.

Takes a lot of nerve to believe that the Catholic Church is the One True Church? Really? Aren’t you Catholic? (I get that BEL isn’t, but you claim to be)

There are no positives of polygamy. Well, I guess the hubby gets to sleep around, but other then his sexual freedom, there are no positives.

Its “messed up” because it goes against the teachings of the Catholic Church and the Sacrament of Matrimony in the Catholic Church, which we as Catholics are required to believe and uphold. We’re not talking about this woman’s feelings, we’re talking about her values and beliefs which run contrary to the beliefs and values of the Catholic Church. It doesn’t matter if its outside MY norm, its outside the beliefs of the Church. We as Catholics may be curious about how people of other beliefs live and function in the world, but that doesn’t mean we can condone their living arrangements if they run contrary to our Catholic beliefs and teachings.

No. It’s messed up because she’s afraid to be alone with a man.

She would only enter into a marriage if another woman was there so she wouldn’t have to be alone.

That has nothing to do with religious beliefs. That has to do with her clearly having some kind of psychological issue. Perhaps trauma from her youth?

PS: Granted… this was just one snippet from one show and we can’t judge her entire psychological profile based on that one snippet but her statement really struck me. I know women who are afraid of being alone with men too… but they all suffered tremendous abuse in their childhoods which they had to work through before they could be in a successful marriage.

I’ve watched it a few times. His wives are very lovely ladies and I have to agree that he is indeed very dedicated to being the best father he can be.

Don’t think I could live like that though. I couldn’t imagine having to share my husband with 3 other women that also sleep with him.

Actually that’s not true. We had an open marriage for a long time. I’m talking being outside the church…and no I was never jealous.
You had an open marriage. Now you are a practicing Catholic who attends daily Mass. What happened in your life for this change?

Why is that messed up? Because that’s outside your norm? I’m not saying they are right or wrong, I’m saying why are her feelings not valid?
Her feelings are valid. A homosexual has feelings for a same gender person. A married person might find him/herself having feelings for another. The feelings are valid. It is what they do with those feelings that causes sin.

You state you and your spouse had an open marriage. I assume this means you both were free to be with other people if you so chose. I also assume since you are now a practicing Catholic that you, and maybe your spouse, has abandoned that lifestyle. Why?

This show is done to promote polygamy and it is not the way God designed marriage and family life. Look at what it does to women. They become baby machines and once they are done making babies, they are pushed aside for younger versions. The men become perverts going from women to women and looking always for the next younger version. The countries that opening have legal polygamy have a real problem with very young girls being forced into marriage just like Jeff Daniels group. The men who have all these wives and children cannot possible give them all the attention they need. I saw an interview once with a break off from Jeff’s group and the leader now in Canada had 100 children. Aren’t Kody’s sister wives now living in separate homes with their kids so how his he and them able to afford 4 homes, 4 wives and 17 children and he can’t even keep track of the kids names. Women in these situations end up living alone with all their kids so essentially they are single moms. The other countries that have polygamy have high poverty rates and abuse of young girls.
In these religious groups, the older men are in direct competition with younger men for the girls. It is so sad and sick and is not the way God intended for marriages and family life.
And this doesn’t even touch upon the high tension and jealous problems they have. God’s plan is one man and one woman in marriage period. And as with same sex “marriage” this is now going to be promoted as just another family style. They talk out of both sides of their mouths saying that they believe this is what God intended them to live yet they say this is not for everyone. Can’t have it both ways.

What worries me the most, is that some children flip through the channels. There’s enough of heresy, lies, and idiocy on television in cartoons alone, so what if a child comes upon this and starts to follow it? They’ll be sensitised to polygamy, and fail to see the moral evil that it is.
AMEN!

I have never actually watched the show - I used to watch HBO’s Big Love though… I don’t care for “reality” shows much because I find them more unrealistic than most fiction 😉

That said I don’t think the subject matter of Sister Wives is that much more problematic than a lot of the other junk on TV. I find polygamy to be less offensive than homosexual marriage. We know God allowed polygamy for some in the past so it appears to not be abominable to Him in the manner of homosexual acts. I don’t think polygamy has a place in Christianity, however, since a Christian marriage is meant to reflect the relationship of Christ and His Church - there is 1 Christ and 1 true Church, no room for additional members. I think polygamy was allowable for God at points in the past since he permitted it for some of his great patricarchs, but I believe it was not His intent for marriage (since he created only one wife for Adam) and is not the ideal for marriage. He wants and demands better for Christian marriage.

I’ve watched the show many a time. It’s not very good and I feel bad for those women. And that Kody dude seems like a big kid, and I don’t understand how those women can look to him for leadership. He doesn’t seem very mature.

My son died in a car accident. He came to me in a dream and asked me to have masses said for him --in the whole tragedy I attended those masses and became Catholic. It’s actually a very long story but that’s the Reader’s Digest condensed version.

I agree with you to a point. God either changed His mind or it’s not that offensive. Solomon, whom the Bible states, “God loved” had over 600 wives and mistresses–hear that MISTRESSES…not all women associated with a king were wives. David had two known women who were named in the Bible; Abigail and Bathsheba. Yet he was a “man after God’s heart”. In those days women were not considered “people” but property. I feel the Church is best reflecting that change in thinking when it promoted monogamy. Most Jewish faiths do not promote polygamy either but there are a few renegade orthodox Jewish men who promote polygamy. I feel Kody is part of a renegade group that pretty much lives off on their own. They have their own private family church services and have publicly renounced all that was done by the FLDS.

As far as the bride of Christ, there is but there isn’t one bride. I’m the bride, you’re the bride, all faithful to Jesus are His bride so…even though we are one bride in a general sense, there are billions of us, so…polygamy could, in theory, argue that they best demonstrate the idea of Jesus Christ; one family, many wives…just as we are many brides, one family in Him. There is massive theological justification for polygamy. The Church teachings reflect a modern more ordered understanding of marriage and family and that’s the way we are directed to live, based on this modern interpretation. When you see the Browns and their beliefs, they really aren’t that way out.

Jacob, David, and Solomon are examples of men that God passionately loved and had their wives. In Jacob’s case it was pretty much a heated contest between two sisters but marrying two sisters was rare. In Jewish tradition you were not allowed to take another wife unless you could demonstrate you can support her and have time for her. Also, in Jewish tradition, a wife was allowed to file for divorce in one case only–otherwise she was not allowed…and that was for being deprived of sex. It was her RIGHT under Jewish law to have sex with her husband. That gave her the chance to have children so it was complex and most Jewish men did not have more than 1 wife because it was horribly expensive and most did not have enough money to have more than 1 wife and all the children as well.

The makers of the show have been up front that Kody and his wives do NOT live off the system in any way and Kody can rattle off the names, age, and birthdates of all his children and wives, seems to be very caring, and demonstrates very deep and complex thinking. Does that mean he’s perfect? No, does that mean I’m promoting their lifestyle? No and yes. Personally I have no problem with it however, I cannot practice or promote what is in violation of my Church’s teachings. I can say that there is a Biblical basis for it and while we do not practice it today, I find there are worse things that one can do and sadly holding up the distorted polygamists is like holding up the distorted monogamists. You can’t tell me that there aren’t more men who practice monogamy who treat their wives like garbage and are abusive and don’t live right than you can probably name. There is good and bad in every belief system…if you don’t like the show, use your remote, but truthfully, they do live pretty well, and are a reasonably healthy example of what polygamy was supposed to be. It may not be our belief, but they are sincere in their devotion to their family and God–and camera crews have reported they are exactly what they make themselves out to be and very genuine. At least their honest. Not like the Catholic man sitting in church whose having sex with various women while he pretends to be a good husband every Sunday or the priest who is having sex and is supposed to be modeling an ideal. If you want to hold up shameful examples, the monogamous couples have much to be ashamed of and really are in no position to point fingers.

I find honesty refreshing. I am loyal fan of the show–I want to learn why, how, what is their truth. In doing that, I can affirm my own.

That’s beautiful. I’m very sorry about your loss. It is a terrible thing to lose a child under any circumstance. The unexpected and sudden death is mind shattering. And I’m happy re. your conversion.

Here’s the thing: you had an open marriage and obviously gave that up because it is a sin. Your posts indicate to me you are willing to accept the life style of Sister Wives. What’s the difference between polygmy and an open marriage? You can’t promote open marriage because you now know it is a sin. Ergo, you cannot promote polygmy for the same reason.

You experienced an epiphany and a conversion. I wouldn’t want to lead others into sin by trying to justify bad behavior.
