Right. The idea is to desensitize us to all of these alternate life styles so that we accept them.

These reality TV shows are inexpensive to put out. With the exception of the Duggars, there isn’t one person (Real Housewives of ANY County, Hoarders, Sister Wives, etc.) that I would ever socialize with. The first one is a total train wreck proving a lot of $ doesn’t mean you can’t be crude and vulgar, second ones are crazy, and the third are immoral.
I would socialize with the Little Couple, or the couple that had the chocolate shop. There was another family of multiples on TLC for one season, they were Catholic, and I would socialize with them. There are a few Food Network stars I’d like to be friends with as well. I don’t think ALL reality shows are train wrecks, but I do agree a majority are.

We can get the show here. We have Direct TV.

A friend of ours watches it, and she had it on while I was at her house. Well, I should say she used to watch it. After a while she could stomach it.

It was like watching a train wreck.

My guess, all of those children will need counseling when they are adults.
I am a HUGE fan of the show. The children are healthy, well-adjusted, happy and probably mentally more stable than any other children I know. One is leaving for college next year and he has been on the show speaking and is highly intelligent, articulate, and very stable. Their family is ALL about the children. Most of us could do well to imitate that part of their lives. Also, they are free to be polygamous or not, to pursue whatever faith they wish and the parents are totally open. They are not a closed group. I think out of all the polygamists I’ve seen they seem the most well-adjusted.

If my faith allowed it I would live a polygamous lifestyle in a NY minute. I am not the least bit jealous, and the idea of having a couple days with a man and then shipping him off before we get aggravated with each other sounds great to me. I’d be perfect for that lifestyle, but the Church doesn’t allow it so I will just watch Sister Wives once a week. All the OT patriarchs had many wives so it’s not unheard of in Judeo-Christian tradition.

I love the family and as far as watching the show “supporting them” that is not the case. They have already been paid for these shows. They tape them a year ahead so whether or not you watch them doesn’t really matter, they don’t get a dime for every TV that tunes in. I wouldn’t miss an episode.

What worries me the most, is that some children flip through the channels. There’s enough of heresy, lies, and idiocy on television in cartoons alone, so what if a child comes upon this and starts to follow it? They’ll be sensitised to polygamy, and fail to see the moral evil that it is.
The show is on at 9 pm on a Sunday night. If your kids are unsupervised with the TV and you don’t have parental controls on your TV then shame on you. I think Toddlers and Tiaras is far more destructive to kids than Sister Wives.

The idea is to show you the truth so you UNDERSTAND…does showing heroin addicts on TV support them? How ludicrous. Sister WIves and their husband are very open about how they do not “advocate” their lifestyle–that it is their religion and that’s it’s not for most people. I don’t condemn or advocate, but understanding the reality from those who live it is preferred to listening to bigots spouting off opinions when they’ve never bothered to even talk to someone first.

If you have seen or have met polygamist families, you have seen the real thing. When you watch a family on TV you are only seeing the best part or the part that the network wants on TV.

That’s the problem… what you see on TV is a very limited view of reality but not reality itself.

I would not base ANY judgment off a TV show.

I wouldn’t condemn based on it either.
But you are judging based on the show. You claim that the children are “healthy, well-adjusted, happy and probably mentally more stable than any other children I know” The problem is, you don’t know these children. You only see what the producers want you to see. You don’t see all of the negative stuff.

Polygamy is immoral AND illegal. The children are being brought up in an immoral household. Because it is also illegal, the children of the second, third and forth wives do not have a daddy that is married to Mommy. 😦

I wouldn’t say that. If Catholic marriage was made illegal by the government you would still do it and consider yourself married. They are as married as they need to be. The government does not make the marriage.

I watch the show out of curiosity. My understanding of how polygamists afford to live the lifestyle is that legally the first wife is the only one that can be claimed. The other wives are single parents with many children which allows them to qualify for government assistance. I don’t know how they afford all the expenses they must incur. The TV show must be paying them really well because we could not afford half of what they seem to be able to afford. The talk of jobs since they have moved to Las Vegas is vague but they have 4 houses, new cars and plenty of money for holiday expenses.

Polygamy has consequences. I live in Arizona, where it is practiced in a town called Colorado City on the border with Utah. Very young girls are forced to marry older men and many young boys, who are potential competition for wives, are forced out of the community to fend for themselves. Older women risk their lives trying to escape. There is nothing admirable about it.

Sister Wives is our introduction to polygamy to make it acceptable. We’ve all heard the story about the frog in cold water – the water is gradually heated, and the frog gets used to it and eventually dies. Western civilization was built on the nuclear family. We are in danger of losing it. We’re getting used to divorce, babies being born to single mothers, cohabitation without marriage, casual sex, homosexual marriage, polygamy, and I just read that a sister and brother have sued for the right to marry. Next comes polyandry. The end of civilization as we have known it. Children – the future of any society – receive no consideration as to what’s best for them at all. Best job for the near future: psychiatry.

It’s not on that late here, we don’t have the same channels. I think it comes on an affiliate-type channel, and it’s always a few episodes behind. And, I don’t have children. I worry about children in my family though. Cousins, and their children. It’s bad enough that parents are now refusing to bring their children up in the faith AND without any formation of conscience: in school children and teenagers especially are being told so many lies about their “sexual health and well being”, contraceptives are being handed out like Smarties at the Halloween party, and just overall learning falsetruths. And, a lot of parents unfortunately don’t supervise their children when watching the TV. I don’t want to derail the thread

I hope I’m not leaving grey area :o

And another case of a father suing to marry his pregnant daughter!!

You do realize that the reason you are not the least bit jealous is probably because your husband is not in love with or intimate with other women, right?

I’ve seen a few episodes.
Like most I started watching out of curiosity, but never regularly tuned in. It became boring to watch so for a long stretch I just stopped. I watched a couple more episodes later on only because I literally couldn’t find anything better on TV at the time. 😛

My point of disgust with the whole show mostly consisted with my overall impression of Cody.
Of all the things I saw on that TV show I think the one thing that left the biggest impression on me was from one episode some time after they had moved. {to Vegas I think it was? For whatever reason(s) they had to leave their hometown.}
They all went out to eat at a restaurant as their ‘once a week family meal’ since they weren’t all living in a single house anymore. When it came time to leave all the kids are all huddled in a big mass outside as they shuffled out.
At that point it was time for Cody to swing over to whichever wife’s house next, so he addressed his own children and says something along the lines of, “Ok, So and so’s + other wives’ kids I have to say bye to. I’m staying at (whichever wife)'s next.”
All I could think of was, *Really, Dipstick?? You can’t be bothered to recall the names of your own children or to whom ‘they belong’ maternally? * It was such an obvious lack of respect for each of his children as individuals. That was the first time I had actually felt physically sick from having watched anything on TV out of sorrow for those kids.
Having witnessed that really drove home how messed up their ‘lifestyle arrangement’ is organized for any family.

Kody, to me, seems like an overgrown child and the women in his life clearly have some issues.

I forget which wife… but I remember one of them stating that the idea of being alone with a man made her uneasy. Which is why she wanted to be a second wife and not a first wife.

C’mon… that doesn’t scream messed up?

Of them all I feel worst for his first wife. I really, really feel she only suggested and supported the marriage with a second because she couldn’t have more children and she so desperately wanted more children AND she wanted to please him.

Ugh. Anyway. I can’t watch the show anymore but I saw the first two seasons and it was completely distressing stuff.
Why is that messed up? Because that’s outside your norm? I’m not saying they are right or wrong, I’m saying why are her feelings not valid?

Actually that’s not true. We had an open marriage for a long time. I’m talking being outside the church…and no I was never jealous.

so are your children, so were mine. We are all immoral in one way or another…unless someone here has attained perfection, if that’s the case let me in on it.

I assume since you don’t want acceptance of babies born to single mothers you are for abortion then? And sick cults can never be used as the standard for people’s private religious beliefs. If this family believes that’s part of their religion how can you point to extremists and say, “see what happens”. That’s like saying all Muslims are terrorists based on the extreme actions of a few sects.
