For the first time in over four decades, a solemn Pontifical Mass in the extraordinary form of the Roman Rite has been offered at the Altar of the Chair of St. Peter’s Basilica. Cardinal Walter Brandmüller, who served as President of the Pontifical Committee for Historical Sciences from 1998 to 2009, was the celebrant at the May 15 Mass, taking the place of Cardinal Antonio Cañizares Llovera, who had been scheduled to attend.

Things…they are a’ changin’ 🙂

wonderful news indeed! however it is not the First TLM in 40 years, Low Masses are said there at the side altars daily now already but this is another part of the journey

Please correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t believe the “Altar of the Chair” at St. Peter’s is the “main altar,” which I thought was reserved to the pope. The OP states the Mass was celebrated by Cardinal Brandmuller. I thought the Altar of the Chair is somewhat behind the main altar in its own chapel under the Holy Spirit window. In Rome last year we saw a funeral liturgy for a cardinal being celebrated there.

I saw the video (have never been to Rome) It’s the one with the 4 big spiral columns.

That’s the Main Altar (as it’s built directly above St Peter’s Tomb), however the Altar of the Chair is a side (High) Altar, which I think is behind the main High Altar of St Peter.

It’s brilliant that a Solemn Pontifical Mass was celebrated in St Peters! for those who don’t know, recently in Amsterdam a Solemn Pontifical Mass was celebrated, I’ll attempt to find the news story (:.

God Bless You All.

The Alter of the Chair is second to the Papal alter.

You’re correct on all counts.

I’d suggest you watch the video more closely. 🙂
