TLM in Birmingham, AL

The area really isn’t that bad, but then I have never worried about it. One of the most beautiful Catholic Churches in the area is Holy Rosary in Gate City. It is a little wooden church about 150 years old. So precious, has been taken care of by the Salesians for decades. If you get a chance to go there, please do.
 
Good deal! Looking forward to the pix! Maybe I’ll try it out next time if you felt safe enough. Did you feel lost during mass or did they hand out a program or did you use a 1962 missel?

I have a missal, but they also had a great handout that had everything in it that was a little more user-friendly. Since it was my first time, I had some difficulty following along. I expected that since everyone told me it’s difficult the first time. At one point I just put my missal down and tried to soak in the beauty and sanctity of it all. It was truly wonderful. I read all the parts of the day’s Mass in my missal several times before I went, so I already knew the scripture readings for the day, and I knew a good bit what the Priest was saying. This definitely helped. I’ll put up the pictures after Mass today as soon as I can figure out how to post them. They’re having another TLM in the Birmingham area in December. The location is TBA, so I’ll let everybody know when the day and location are set. God Bless!
 
OT - But are any of you going to try to make it to the Dec. 15th TLM at the Shrine?

Will it be a invitation only? 🤷

I know someone who went to the Sept. one…I may ask her about the details.
 
I’ve got great news once again for those in the Birmingham Diocese:

Sorry it’s coming so late, I just found out about it. There will a TLM offered on Sat. the 8th of December at Blessed Sacrament Church in Birmingham, AL for the Feast of the Immaculate Conception (fulfills the Holy Day obligation.)

Our next Holy Mass and spiritual talk shall be held this Saturday, December 8th, again at Blessed Sacrament Roman Catholic Church, and we have been given Bishop Baker’s support and blessing to invite Rev. Fr. Joseph Lee, of the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Peter to offer a Low Mass and deliver a short spiritual talk on the topic of the Immaculate Conception. This invitation comes a bit late because we have been waiting for Bishop Baker’s final approval. The Mass fulfills your obligation, and what a blessing to celebrate this wonderful feast in such a wonderful church, and with the wonderful Traditional Latin Rite. Holy Mass will be offered at 11:00 am, followed directly by Fr. Lee’s talk. If you haven’t attended an Una Voce event before, please come and meet Fr. On another forum I saw the following quote, with no source indicated. Can anyone identify the source?

“Bishop Baker has granted the Extraordinary Form of the Mass to be said in Huntsville and Birmingham on alternating Sunday’s. In Birmingham, there will be Mass at Blessed Sacrament Church on January 6th and 20th at 2:00 pm. Huntsville will celebrate Mass in the Extraordinary Form January 27 at 4:00 (with an Una Voce meeting afterwards) and will have mass every other week [at St. Mary’s of the Visitation?] beginning in February. Fr. Mackey has also been granted permission to begin training other priests in the Diocese who want to learn the Extraordinary Form. Eventually, Bishop Baker wants to have the TLM in Huntsville and Birmingham every week, and this is the trial run to see if it will be able to be sustained on a weekly basis.”

I have heard some rumors regarding this, but I still don’t know if it is absolutely true or not. Fr. Mackey is the parish priest at St. Charles Borromeo in Jacksonville, which is about an hour east of Birmingham. He is also the Chaplain for the local Una Voce Chapter. He had a meeting with Bishop Baker this Tuesday, presumably to talk about the establishment of permanent TLM’s in Birmingham and Huntsville. Tuscaloosa has even been brought up I believe, with the possibility of it being offered occasionally at St. John the Baptist. Currently, with the exception of a few EWTN Priests, Fr. Mackey is the only Priest in the Diocese who can offer a TLM. I had heard rumors that the Diocese would start a rotation: have a TLM in Tuscaloosa the 1st Sunday, Birmingham the 2nd, Huntsville the 3rd, Jacksonville, the 4th, etc. It’s very exciting to say the least, and there are some folks who’ve been waiting far, far longer than I have to get something like this going. The Una Voce Chapter wasn’t allowed to be public under Bishop Foley, but it has been given a full blessing by Bishop Baker. There have been three official meetings so far. The first one had about 10 people in attendance, the second one had about 25, and the third had over 60. From 10 to over 60 in only two months is pretty good by anyone’s standards. The next meeting is in January at St. Mary’s, but there is still nothing permanent as of yet. The Motu has upset a lot of the clergy around here, and there are only a small number of Priests willing to learn the TLM. Hopefully Fr. Mackey will be allowed to train them, because one for this Diocese ain’t gonna be enough when the word starts spreading.

Well, Fi, whether it’s true or not, let’s keep up the prayers for restoration of the Mass, here and everywhere else. We’ll probably find out shortly how the meeting turned out.

Yes, praying is definitely the best advice. I plan on heading down to my Parish today and offering up a Rosary in thanksgiving for the Motu and for everyone who wants a TLM close, but doesn’t have one, that they get one soon.
 
There is going to be a traditional Latin Mass this Sunday–The Epiphany, 6 January–at Blessed Sacrament Church in Birmingham, AL. It will be a Low Mass offered by Fr. Mackey of Jacksonville, AL and will be at 2:00 P.M.

This is a trial initiative put forth by Bishop Baker and will be used to gauge the desire for the traditional Latin Mass in the Diocese. There is the possiblity that there could be several TLM’s offered in the future in Birmingham, Huntsville, Jacksonville, and Tuscaloosa depending on the turnout of these Masses. The temporary situation is that Masses will alternate Sunday-to-Sunday between Birmingham and Huntsville. So come and support the TLM and show Bishop Baker that there is a need for multiple TLM locations in the Diocese of Birmingham.

Hello all! I’m the Secretary for Una Voce Northern Alabama. My husband and I started the chapter nearly three years ago when we moved to Alabama (at that time we called it Una Voce Western Alabama). I’m so happy to hear some of you first-timers were moved by the low Masses recently – we hope to have High Masses this year!
