If the Motu Proprio be released do you think EWTN will celebrate TLM on air?

I hope so, Ive maintained the TLM would be much more conductive on Television than the Novus Ordo they currently air.

A translation of the Mass can be put as ‘subtitles’. Also, the true beauty of the Mass could be captured with camera angles et al.

On the totally visual level, there are if anything, more things to look at in the Old Mass. The priest has many more hand gestures, signs of the cross, many more rubrics governing the movement of the missal etc.

It would also help to promote the TLM vastly… although I do not know if those who run EWTN would like the TLM to become more popular… in the same sense most likely, some on this forum would not like it to become so. I don’t know though… I’m only speculating…

Someone told me that the people originally wanted to have the Mass celebrated with the priest facing east and with the people. However, supposedly the bishop would not allow them. So, if the motu propio allows one to celebrate the TLM without the explicit approval of the bishop, I would not be surprised if EWTN takes advantage of it.

My guess is that, while there may be an occasional TLM airred on EWTN, it will not be a norm; nor will it likely be often (if at all) celebrated live from the chapel. I think that they will want to “keep the peace” to a certain extent rather than “rock the boat”.

EWTN, at least when Mother was running things, fully intended to air the TLM occasionally.

They were forbidden from airing the mass with the priest ad orientum, making the airing of the TLM impossible.

If Mother still ran EWTN, you can be certain they would air the TLM routinely, beginning on July 7;) . As it stands now, its anybody’s guess.

Silly question but I want to learn more…I’ve never assisted (attended) at a TLM …is the homily in Latin also? Do those who assist at a TLM know Latin? My parish, unfortunately, purchased a $10,000 screen on which the readings; psalms, etc. are posted during mass. I despise it…are there any TLM that would allow such a screen to be used?

Their loss, YouTube’s gain. 😃

Not a silly question. Homily (as well as the repeat of the readings) is in the vernacular. Those who assist at TLM don’t necessarily know Latin although many know a few Latin prayers, but it’s not required. Interesting concept of using the screen though. First I’ve heard of it.

The homily is in English, or the vernacular. And every one I’ve heard has been a good sermon, all about faith, morals, and the Catholic faith. Quite unlike what I hear at my home NO parish.

No, you will never see a projector and screen used at a TLM. Neither will you hear mundane, heretical hymns that were written in the last forty years. You will, however, be exposed to the rich, sacred musical history of the Catholic Church. I hope you get to attend your first TLM soon.

Hopefully they wouldn’t jump in with their commentary every time somebody genuflects or makes any kind of motion, like the Vatican reporters do when they are televising the Papal liturgies (which is the reason I refuse to watch them). I also hope if they did that, they would replace one of the timeslots for a televised Novus Ordo rather than make an additional one- I think they already show Mass too many times.

That being said, I’m not sure I could stand to listen to them speak in Latin the whole time- their Latin diction is dreadful as it is.

Televised Masses require permission, regardless of Rites and Altar-positions, ect.

So even if the MP releases the Traditional Mass [Edited by Moderator], they will still be able to keep it from going on public television.

That might not be a bad idea. Maybe it’s not so much the Latin that would be a problem but the fact most of the Mass is intended to be said in a low voice.

Most likely it will not be a Low Mass which is televised, but a Sung Mass, perhaps even a High Mass. Should EWTN get a good schola to chant the Mass (or perhaps even find a choir and orchestra to use a classical or baroque setting) then many viewers are sure to be captivated.

Of course certain parts- the Prayers at the Foot of the Altar, the Canon, the Last Gospel, ect.- will still be spoken sotto voce, but even then subtitles can be used.

They already have permission to televise the mass.

If it is just a matter of the “ordinary” versus “extraordinary” form of the Latin Rite mass, I don’t think the Vatican will permit the local bishop to forbid televising the TLM.

If the local bishop tried, following this Motu Proprio, I suspect EWTN will have recourse to an appeal to Ecclesia Dei, in which case the local bishop would have to explain to them (i.e., TO THE POPE!) why he is restricting televising an extraordinary rite that the Pope just personally derestricted.

That would be fun to watch.😃

Plus, I strongly suspect that immediately upon the heels of the publication of the Motu Proprio, it will be a globally televised TLM, celebrated by the Pope himself, that will be shown on EWTN.

Following that precedent, would a local bishop DARE to restrict it?

Oh I think the Bishop might try to restrict it

Remember he never forbade the offering of the Latin Mass, just the televising of it, so he may wish to do the same even after the MP.

If I were EWTN and this happened, I would, as you suggest, televise the first Papal TLM (since one will surely follow soon after the MP) - and do so on continuous repeat 24 hours a day 7 days a week 😃

Do they have a bishop at present? I seem to remember that they were awaiting a replacement? Although Bp. Foley is still administrator, maybe the Pope was waiting to see the response to his Motu Proprio before naming a new bishop to the home of the largest Catholic television network in the English speaking world.
November 1999
Bishop’s Decree Raises Questions
adoremus.org/1199-Foley.html
by Helen Hull Hitchcock
Code:
A decree issued by Birmingham Bishop David Foley forbidding any priest within his diocese to celebrate Mass facing the altar rather than facing the congregation has raised many questions across the spectrum of liturgical opinion.
Code:
The decree was sent to all priests and "juridical persons" in the diocese on October 18, to take effect on November 18.
Code:
The bishop's introduction to the decree stated that a "well-intentioned but flawed movement" encourages priests "to take liberties with the Mass by celebrating in a manner called ad orientem, that is, with their backs to the people" without the permission of a bishop....

If the Motu Proprio be released do you think EWTN will celebrate TLM on air?
Yes. The ONLY reason why they will not broadcast the TLM from their monastery is due to the restrictions of the current indult.

The EWTN theologians, particularly Colin Donovan I believe, have stated this fact, that the current Moto Proprio, Ecclesia Dei Afflicta, by Pope John Paul II only allows the Mass for groups who want it with their local bishop’s approval. If EWTN broadcast a TLM, it would not be in accordance with the current indult.

If the Pope were to however release the restrictions of the TLM, to where the local Bishop could not restrict the use of the Traditional Roman Rite, then you would see a TLM on EWTN.

do you have a link to a televised TLM that I can watch? many thanks!

I could be wrong, because quite frankly I couldn’t believe my eyes at the time, but I thought I saw a TLM on EWTN once. I watched for a while because, like I said, I couldn’t believe my eyes, but the priest was ad orientum and all the communicants recieved at an altar rail on their knees. Did I mistake this for a TLM?

They are still waiting to have a bishop named.
