Vatican Clarifies Holy Days and '62 Missal

LONDON, APRIL 30, 2008 (Zenit.org).- The Vatican clarified the celebration of holy days of obligation when celebrating the extraordinary form of the Roman rite according to the 1962 Missal, reported the bishops’ conference of England and Wales.

The episcopal conference submitted a query to the Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei, which confirmed that in the Roman rite, whichever form of the liturgy is being celebrated, the holy days of obligation are to be held in common.

Where the obligation has been removed and the holy day transferred to the Sunday, this is to be followed in both ordinary and extraordinary celebrations of Mass, the pontifical commission clarified.

Unfortunately, this is not clear. My guess is that, if Ascension Thursday is transferred to Sunday, we must celebrate the Ascension on Thursday in the EF, and then its external solemnity on Sunday; otherwise, Ascensiontide is destroyed, and what does one celebrate today, tomorrow, and Saturday?

That…is a very good question Father. Rogation days and Sunday after the Ascension - as oppossed to Ascension Sunday.:ehh:

My local FSSP parish is celebrating Ascension tonight. I’m about to head out for it, in face.

I have been firmly told by Priests who celebrate the extraordinary rite that this only applies to the obligation…that it is still possible for the Mass to be said on the Thursday. I wish we could see the text of the dubium and the response; they should both be available.

Extra: see this. It is clear that one must celebrate the feast on the Sunday, where transferred, but that the old day is not proscribed.

We celebrated last night and it was truly heavenly. William Byrd, de Victoria and Palestrina were sung.
Two English hymns were sung for the procession and recession respectively, “Praise Him as He mounts the Skies” and “Sing We Tirumphant Hymns of Praise” with the latter text by the Venerable Bede. “Who by a road before untrod ascended to the throne of God” it says. It makes me tear up to think about how we must wait so long to be united with Him in heaven. I am in mourning that the Easter season is over for this year.

We will continue to go to Mass on the Holy Days on the days they fall on. One year I went to an Eastern rite liturgy for Ascension.

Once again, our “clarifications” from the PCED seem only to muddy the waters. We have a pretty clear statement, much like when we were told, “Of course St. Joseph is transferred to Mar. 15,” but that clear answer doesn’t have any binding force whatsoever. And then it raises those other questions (mentioned above) about what to do with Ascensiontide, whether it actually proscribes saying Ascension Mass on Ascension Thursday or simply prescribes celebrating it on the following Sunday, etc. I understand the desire for greater unity between the calendars, but the PCED really needs to make its decisions clear, detailed, and binding or we’re just going to keep getting more confused.

It would not matter if you did, because you would still be going to Mass on Sunday. So you would not be failing to fulfill any obligation.

First of all, let me say that I hope NO changes are made to the TLM for some time. The Church is still several funerals, a lot of ordinations, and several good consecrations away from being “well staffed” in many high offices.
Having said that if there are to be slight changes (new saints days since 1962, etc.) or “clarifications”, I wish they would be released in one, definitive document, and not all of this bits and pieces. All these piecemeal answers do is sew confusion, and raise more questions (not to mention the blood pressure of many Traditionalists )
