Hello all,

You’ll have to excuse the late posting, but I was busy earlier this week.

I finally had the opportunity to attend the Tridentine mass here in Detroit, and as promised, I’m reporting back on my thoughts of the experience. It was certainly interesting, and it is obviously enlightening to see how mass was conducted in the past. Hymns were sung, a bonus in my view, since not all churches which hold a Latin Mass use hymns.

I must admit, however, it was not without disappointment. They used a rather confusing system to help worshipers follow the service (I don’t own a missal - certainly not the 1962 version), it was spread out over three different items, a generic pocket missal, a sheet with the current readings, and a separate sheet for the specific prayers for the day - trying to keep track and follow along, in my view, seemed to distract from worship of God and reflection upon what was actually happening. I felt more like an observer of the mass than anything, not different from watching a TLM online.

I was also surprised to see the number of women who chose to wear veils (nothing in the church said it was required, and it was still no more than 40%), but also by the lack of confession before mass (in contradiction to the website and bulletin).

Would I do it again? Probably, and I very well may in the near future. Would I make it my regular method of worship? Probably not.

Don’t give up on the TLM, frater meus. It gets easier to follow along the more you attend. The first few times I just observed the Mass without looking at the 1962 Missalette and the Liturgy of the Word handout.

Was it a High or Low Mass?

The only diocese-approved TLM in our area is about 30 minutes away (at 1800). I started to attend as my job requires me to be on call once a month from Saturday afternoon to Sunday afternoon so I miss the OF Saturday Vigil and all of the Masses on Sunday morning at my parish.

My recommendation is to go through an EF Order of Mass online, memorize as much of each prayer (Kyrie, Gloria, etc.) as you can, at least enough for you to be able to identify which prayer the priest is currently at. Then, you can just follow along with the Propers and that will be the only paper you will need.

Both forms of the Latin Mass are Holy. - The Body and Blood of our Lord in Holy Communion is amazing.

Reverance, proper attire, and prayer are required.

Only personal preferences determine if one wants to attend an OF or EF Mass.

I attend both, and have an MFT Daily Roman Missal, and a 1962 Roman Missal.
