why is it that a lot of traditionals have their daughters wear amish like clothing? Why does this Happen? I find it weird.

It happens (although not that often in my experience) because traditional Catholics tend to value modesty in clothing. It is an expression of the virtue of chastity. Because so much of modern clothing is immodest sometimes Catholics end up very out of style in our attempts to be modest. Ideally, one should wear clothing that is modest and yet does not draw attention to oneself because of its style.

perhaps a lot of them find it weird that people go into a church, any church, for any rite, dressed for the beach or the backyard.

I find it weird too :o I haven’t seen it at the TLM’s I’ve been to, except for one family. It actually will reflect badly on Catholics if you dress really out of style… modesty does not mean looking ugly. Modesty done correctly should make you look classy, not like you’re amish… IMHO modesty for women means wearing more dresses and skirts, and if you have any inkling of fashion sense this will make you look better than you do in tacky jeans.

Why is it that a lot of neo-Catholics have their daughters wear novus ordo clothing that exposes their tattoos? Why does this happen? I find it weird…

Maybe they want thier daughters to dress that way because they want them to dress in a modes wayt. A few years ago at our parish , we had an Argentine priest, who during a homily about modesty, told us a very funny story. He said that in Argentina , there was a woman who came up to Communion , dressed in a very inappropriate way, and the priest instead of saying " The Body of Christ" said " Christ what a body!"

If you had a teenage daughter and had to take her to the store to find clothing you will know that it is almost impossible to find a modest dress which could be described as “fashionable” All modern, fashionable clothing is immodest. Its a major problem.

I love funny sermons!

Last week this very strict looking mother in Amish like clothing walked in with her son and daughter and husband all dressed very amish like. I sort of felt bad for the daughter, she looked very sad. The mother almost hit her son for forgetting to genuflect!

In our day people are shocked by what was considered very normal in the past. While objectively it is better to err on the side of gentleness, to combat our misguided tendencies in the modern world, it frequently is more beneficial to be stricter rather than lenient.

I guess the family was strict. In TLM locations there are quite a few strict families.

It is interesting to me on how brainwashed we have become in our modern world to the extent that if our children are not dressed like a 7 year old version of Miley Cyrus with her cute little midriff showing and walking on tiny high heels, then we are neglecting their needs or not helping them to be pretty or attractive enough. I don’t know how many of you regularly shop for children’s clothing and find it inexpensive.

Try finding a modest dress that hangs below the knee for a youngster or a teenager that looks like Sunday Mass attire. Then try replacing them every year as the children grow, then try multiplying that effort and cost times perhaps 5 daughters in one family … then try with eight daughters.

You soon learn to temper your smugness on the “Amish-looking” dress when you learn that many mothers end up making these clothes for their children due to cost and/or a simple lack of availability of anything they find suitable. Try taking the time to make and fit a dress on a young person. There aren’t may Amish-people clothes stores - they are mostly hand made. Perhaps they wont get them on American Idol or will not have the boys breaking out in a hot sweat but I’ll bet they mean more to Our Lord because of their simplicity and the time and love invested in them.

And as a veteran of raising children, I can assure you that the sad look on a child’s face is not usually out of self-conscious embarrassment over being perceived by other parishioners who should be praying but are instead wondering over their neighbor’s children’s clothes.

I never said there was anything wrong with it! I just thought the daughter seemed sad! I thought it was really beautiful that they dressed so modestly, I felt embarrassed because I wasn’t dressed as nicely.

I wasn’t quibbling with you Andrew … only the “Amish” stereotype with is not flattering.

Huh, okay. Somehow I thought there might be a middle ground somewhere between this:
