My goodness, modesty is now something to be ashamed of? To what further depths of self destruction and self loathing will the Catholic people plummet?

Chastity and modesty go hand in hand. It is a poverty of Catholic values which mock the proper mode of dress for a woman or a man.

I work in an upscale mall in the s of fla. The amount of skin, the amt of see through fabrics, the number of shorts which actually do not fully cover the buttocks that parade by my store is staggering. The men in my store who range in age from 22 to 68 revel in the skin. They count the number of times one can actually see a woman’s breast visible under the sheer fabric which is supposed to encase it.

And here’s a thread which begins by mocking the women who choose to follow Our Lady’s example. On a Catholic forum. I believe I’ve almost seen it all now.

Um, you can dress modestly without looking Amish. I’ve never read any claim that Our Lady dressed in some way that would be considered outlandish in her society at her time (burqa, perhaps?) but I’ve read several times on this thread the false dichotomy between Amish-style dress and tube tops / micro-minis / etc. The OP did not say, “I’m surprised that people dress modestly,” he said, “why is it that a lot of traditionals have their daughters wear amish like clothing?”

why is it that a lot of traditionals have their daughters wear amish like clothing? Why does this Happen? I find it weird.
And I find such a poorly composed post to be immature at best and offensive at worst.

Ummmm, I don’t believe you’re following the conversation very well. Long skirts, high neclines and sleeves down to the elbow at the very least, and none of it snug to the body is being compared to amish like dress, as if there were something wrong with that.

Ummmmmm…

Look, now we know we’re both capable of humming. I’m more of a baritone. Can’t hit the higher or lower notes. You?

Well, you feigned shock and tore your hair out over the “depths of self destruction and self loathing” that we had plummeted to by criticizing modesty in dress. But no one has criticized modesty, and no one has said people should wear halter tops. The (implied) criticism was in taking it to an extreme, but then Giuseppe posted that the alternative to Amish is looking like Miley Cyrus, which is clearly a false dichotomy, and you chimed in. So I think I’m following the conversation pretty well.

Not feighning shock, mt. The shock was real. And yes, modesty is being mocked. You posted a picture of an amish woman. This is not how traditional women dress. This is how one who wishes to mock how traditional women dress depict traditional women.

You have mocked very well and cleverly. You have disguised it not as well.

Obviously, some do, as confirmed by numerous posters on the first page of this thread. Sorry you want to deny it; the whole point of the discussion was whether it’s an embarrassment for traditionalists.

Female modesty in dress is also a sign of respect and charity to the priest.

TLM stereotyping is a very accurate title for this tread. According to some here traditionalists are quasi-Amish who beat their children for not genuflecting.

This is suppose to be a forum for people of a traditional Catholic mindset to discuss relevant subjects and issues. It is not suppose to be an easy target for mockery, agitation, or division.

No mt, the photo of the amish woman you posted is not an accurate depiction of how traditional women dress. It is a caricature, which you youself posted, of the modesty exhibited by traditional women, as if there is something shameful or embarrassing in following the example Our Lady set in her own mode of dress. Modesty was the norm in her time. It is held up as something to be mocked as sooooopious in our own. As your cleverly placed photograph shows the unsuspecting who shouuld be in, but not of, this world.

It is interesting to me on how brainwashed we have become in our modern world to the extent that if our children are not dressed like a 7 year old version of Miley Cyrus with her cute little midriff showing and walking on tiny high heels, then we are neglecting their needs or not helping them to be pretty or attractive enough. I don’t know how many of you regularly shop for children’s clothing and find it inexpensive.

Try finding a modest dress that hangs below the knee for a youngster or a teenager that looks like Sunday Mass attire. Then try replacing them every year as the children grow, then try multiplying that effort and cost times perhaps 5 daughters in one family … then try with eight daughters.

You soon learn to temper your smugness on the “Amish-looking” dress when you learn that many mothers end up making these clothes for their children due to cost and/or a simple lack of availability of anything they find suitable. Try taking the time to make and fit a dress on a young person. There aren’t may Amish-people clothes stores - they are mostly hand made. Perhaps they wont get them on American Idol or will not have the boys breaking out in a hot sweat but I’ll bet they mean more to Our Lord because of their simplicity and the time and love invested in them.

And as a veteran of raising children, I can assure you that the sad look on a child’s face is not usually out of self-conscious embarrassment over being perceived by other parishioners who should be praying but are instead wondering over their neighbor’s children’s clothes.
I think you are right about this.

From my FSSP church bulletin:
Based on the principle that clothing is meant to conceal rather than to reveal, please dress modestly, even in warm weather.
Men and boys: please wear full length pants. Shorts and sleeveless shirts are not appropriate for Mass. Remove your ball cap before entering the Church.
Women and girls: dresses should reach well below the knee when sitting; shirts should cover the chest up to the collar bone. In your charity, avoid tight shirts, sleeveless blouses and tank tops. Finally, if pants are worn, they should be loose-fitting.

But you’re just making that up. The OP asked why some traditionalists wear “amish like clothing.” Floresco said, “It happens.” Ljubim said he’s seem “one family” do it, dressing “really out of style.” Then AndrewF1995 reported having seen last week a “very strict looking mother in Amish like clothing walked in with her son and daughter and husband all dressed very amish like.”

And Amish clothing isn’t a caricature. I’ve lived in places with not-insignificant Amish populations; it’s genuinely how they dress. Maybe you aren’t familiar with the Amish, but the picture I posted is an accurate representation. According to several posters, they see some traditional Catholics dress in Amish-like clothing. I don’t know what’s so hard to understand about this, or why you flip back and forth between denying it, and saying that people who find it strange are against modesty.

Bless your heart, mt. Always going out of your way to find the very best of people’s intentions. Except of course for those of traditionalists.

Huh? I haven’t said anything about anyone’s intentions. I’ve just tried to point out that we don’t need to accuse people of supporting halter tops and micro-miniskirts just because they find it unusual that people would come to Mass dressed like:

I have come across a group called “Plain Catholics” who literally wear Amish-style clothing but are Catholics. It is possible that this is the explanation for this kind of clothing. Here is a website: plaincatholic.webs.com/

Right, they’re Amish.
Yes, I am aware of that. 😉

I go to an FSSP parish and women don’t dress like that at all. They do however, dress modestly, keeping the wishes of our pastor in mind; that clothing is meant to conceal, rather than to reveal.

James 1:14-15
But every man is tempted by his own concupiscence, being drawn away and allured. Then, when concupiscence hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin. But sin, when it is completed, begetteth death.
Would any Catholic woman really want to have that on her conscience?

Exactly – no one is saying that modest clothing is tantamount to dressing like the Amish. There’s modesty, and then there’s taking it to the max!
