That is a very interesting website!
I thought so too. It also affects this thread. Many of the arguments and assumptions here seem to have the premise that traditional Catholics never actually dress like Amish. Therefore the people who have claimed to see it are exaggerating, probably to put down modesty.

But there is a movement within traditional Catholicism of people who actually do dress like Amish. Finding this interesting or even strange has nothing to do with rejecting modesty. This really is unusual and worthy of comment.

I am also somewhat bemused by the number of comments since I posted this that do not seem to have realized the implications of the existence of Plain Catholics for this discussion. People have been continuing their arguments as before.

I have come across a group called “Plain Catholics” who literally wear Amish-style clothing but are Catholics. It is possible that this is the explanation for this kind of clothing. Here is a website: plaincatholic.webs.com/
Wow. What a fascinating website and group of people. I would like to learn more about them. Thank you for posting their site.

To stay on topic I could not determine which form of Mass they endorse if either. There is a picture of a TLM outdoor Mass which is curious. At least I think that’s what it is. They do pray the Liturgy of the Hours which suggests the Novus Ordo, but then again I pray the LOTH and attend the EF so who knows.

The saying, ‘clothes are meant to conceal rather than reveal’ is the traditional Catholic way especially at Holy Mass. If anyone finds that weird may the Holy Spirit bring them the gilft of piety.

I came across this group because a member of it posts to a mailing list I’m on for traditional Catholics. I’ve been assuming this means that all Plain Catholics attend TLM, but I really don’t know.

That is interesting that they use that term. “Plain people” has a fairly specific meaning and connotation.

I’ve never seen amish dress at our EF mass. Most of the women dress modestly. I have seen teenage girls wearing skirts which are too short. I would rather see a girl dressed like an Amish than to see immodesty in an EF mass. Its bad enough to see it at an OF mass.

Have you noticed that women who wear head coverings dress modestly. How ridiculous would a skimpy outfit be on a woman wearing a veil. Therefore a simple solution to ensure that women dress modestly at mass is to require the veil or a head covering of some kind to be worn by women at mass.

Of course women wearing a head covering is an ageless Sacred Tradition of the church. The apostle Paul claimed that in the churches of God there was “no other practice”.

Any wonder therefore when we depart from Sacred Tradition that we will have severe problems, in this case a burgeoning display of immodesty amongst our womenfolk right there at the mass. And the males are no better with T-shirts and hoodies.

The sort of woman who chooses to wear a veil is likely to dress modestly. It does not necessarily follow that a woman who is required to wear a veil will dress modestly.

I do think that head-covering is an excellent practice and ought to be encouraged, but I don’t think that this is a good argument for it.

“Our womenfolk”? Maybe they just need a good whuppin’ to put em back in their place, right?

What century is this?

I don’t see anything wrong with the expression. It makes me think of the sort of men who gave up their places on lifeboats to women and children. Although, like you, I associate it with another era.

LOL. I thought I met get a bite from that one.

Well whatever century that was it was certainly better than this century as far as morals and piety goes.

if you had a teenage daughter and had to take her to the store to find clothing you will know that it is almost impossible to find a modest dress which could be described as “fashionable” all modern, fashionable clothing is immodest. Its a major problem.
untrue.

I love to watch the old movies from the 1930’s and 40’s. You know, the ones they show on TBS? Those ladies knew how to dress. They had style and sophistication and they were also modest. Really top rate.

Which is exactly why I prefer OF masses. 😛 It makes me feel right at home. You know? On planet earth, in the 21st century?

Excuse me? I’ll have you know I’m quite proud of my baggy, printed T-shirts and would just love to wear a hoodie (especially one with a really big hood). The baggy shirts allow plenty of cool ventilation especially on windy days. As for the hoodies, I find it cool at how it makes the wearer look stealthy with the way it shades the face and all.

I know rite? It’s sad how Trads are tired of bad stereotypes yet don’t seem to do much about the ones reinforcing them. :\

I doubt it. Whenever we move forward morally in one direction, we move backwards in another. Sure the culture of the 1800s was more conservative but it was also more oppressive towards women, non-Western peoples, anti-cultural (unless its Western), and downright fanatical with no compassion.

And how do you know these things?
