I go to a Catholic university, and I have met a variety of interesting people here. One is a friend who I will call Joseph, and one is my roommate who I will call Jennifer. Joseph is probably the most Catholic person I know. He can tell you anything you could possibly want to know about any saint, and is considering becoming a priest. Jennifer is probably the most liberal person on campus. She’s not religious at all and is very, very involved with the Gay-Straight Alliance and stuff like that. Joseph strongly dislikes Jennifer because he thinks she’s weird; he’s always criticizing her clothes and hair, and the fact that her half of our room is always messy, and her political views, and the way she talks, and anything else he can think of. I happen to think Jennifer is a really decent person; she’s a little different, but she’s never intentionally unkind and always sticks up for people.
Anyway, one day Joseph was hanging out in my room. He walked over to my roommate’s desk and starts rummaging through her movie collection. He picks up a couple of them and looks at them in disbelief. Then he turns to me and says, “These promote homosexuality. You should throw them away.” And he was serious. And then he kept going on about how the Church says you should chuck anything profane simply because it’s bad, and every time he’s hung out in my room since then he always asks if I’ve thrown them away yet and then gets all serious and disappointed when I say I haven’t.
My understanding of that subject was that you should throw away things that are detrimental to the spiritual life of another person, but if they are that person’s property, you need to have a really good reason to believe that the good of removing them would far outweigh the bad of stealing another person’s stuff. I really don’t want to do it because she is not the kind of person who would take that well; she would be severely ticked that someone had stolen her stuff (like flying-into-a-rage-and-going-home-for-good type of ticked) and buy new ones.
I am fairly confident in this, but I just wanted to know if I have the right idea here, because he’s always telling me I’m wrong about everything and it kind of makes me wonder after awhile.
