Like any other living being any god or goddess should have the purpose of attaining enlightenment. Whether they actually do have this purpose or not is a different question. What we should do and what we actually do are often rather different.

I was not aware that buddhists recognized God at all. I have never seen it mentioned or heard it discussed among buddhists at all, ever.

I don’t presume to answer for Buddhists, but as I understand, “God”…the Eternal…the Divine…that Principle which all stems from is “assumed”, but our “concern” is with this life and how we deal with others, who are “incarnations” of the Divine, is what Buddhism is most concerned with. To look into the face of another is to see God.

That must be some weird romanization scheme for Sanskrit, where they spell Buddhism EST.



Actually, Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhists believe that the only thing that ultimately exists is Mahavairocana Buddha, the Ground of Being–or in other words, God. Suffering is caused by the delusion that one has an existence apart from Mahavairocana.

Did the OP mean by “Your God’s purpose in life,” the purpose of God’s life, or His purpose for our lives?

Because the answer to the former, is “He is His own purpose”–formal cause is identical with final cause, natch, since God is a purely simple substance.

The answer to the latter is, “Our purpose is to know, love, and serve God”, or in other words, to rephrase things in existentialist terms (just because I can), “To discharge our duty to our own Being.”
