If today, the Pope dispensed the celibacy rule, would you seriously look into entering the seminary? I dont think I would because i’m kinda from the old school, but I was just wondering about the rest of the guys. I don’t think I’ve seen a poll on this one. Please don’t think i am implying that I want this. Its a discipline so it could possibly change.

No. I was called to the diaconate, not the priesthood – they are two different calls.

Deacon Ed

I am married and I am ordained…not as a priest but as a permanent deacon of the church. I am so blessed and know this is the role God has called me to lead. I would never entertain the role of priest, I think the role of deacon for a married man is the perfect fit.

In my own opinion with the surge of men called to the diaconate, we may be asked to fill a greater role in the administration of our parish, and some men are called to this role within the diaconate, but not all of us are.

The thing we should be praying for is not LET MY WILL BE DONE,
But rather…THY WILL BE DONE!

The amazing thing about God is he knows what is best for His church, and at this time…I think celibate men will serve our church the best as priests. Celibacy is not meant as a punishment but as a move towards holiness. Don’t we want that of our priests?

I absolutely could not agree more. This just came up in a conversation the other day and I was wondering if anyone would. The diaconate is a wonderful thing and I agree that there are different callings. My angle is not to argue for or against, but would there be a significant interest.

Only if I could send my wife to a nunnery.

JUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUST KIDDING!!! 😛

I am ordained to the permanent diaconate for seven years and have never felt any other different calling. Although being a deacon has its similarities to being a priest, I still feel that I was never called to the priesthood. As a deacon I perform baptisms, preside a marriage ceremonies, preach and also preside at wake and burial services. I truly love serving as a deacon with all my heart and soul. So I have to say that if the Pope decided to allow priests to marry, I don’t think that I would.

I’m a married man who does not feel called to the priesthood at all. I may have a call to the diaconate some time down the road (people keep asking me), but my priorty is my wife and kids. As it is, the ministries I’m involved in now tend to put a strain on our family. Our pastor happens to be a married priest and though he is a holy man and a superb and beloved pastor, I am aware of the difficulties he faces. The Church is wise in Her discipline.
