According to my wife, this has officially been condemned by the authorities. Yet it continues (surprise surprise):mad:
 
Really, it almost seems blasphemous to me, almost as if you’re saying to Jesus, “Hey! I can do this too!”

St. Peter didn’t think it was proper to be crucified in the same manner. Why should we think it’s acceptable for us?

Now that you mention this, I believe your wife is correct. I vaguely recall hearing this. A quick Google search turned up this article.

Interesting perspective. Very insightful. Impossible to disagree with.
 
Such extreme forms of self imposed mortification have usually been banned by the church. God gave us our bodies and we are responsible for taking care of them. Fasting in moderation may be difficult but it does us no harm (in fact, probably does a lot of us some good) however deliberately inflicting wounds on oneself is never acceptable.

That being said, I think in fairness to those who do partake in the practice, I don’t think they are trying to claim worthiness of Christ’s death. Rather I think they are doing it as a sign of devotion. When I pray the Rosary I meditate on what Jesus must have gone through when he was crucified; they people probably have a better understanding than any of us… even though they generally only stay on the cross for a few short minutes.
