I don’t think your giving Adventism a fair shake. Most Adventists I know dislike that we are known for calling the pope anti-Christ. Personally I have been quite fond of the popes since John XXIII. I think they, unlike most other Church leaders, have stood against modernistic materialism very well despite the pressure they get from theologians around the world. That said, most Adventists believe that the Medieval Church as a whole was anti-Christ, this includes the Protestant denominations because there were no Protestants prior to the Reformation. We were all in the business of misrepresenting God together. Then when the Reformation did come along, the Protestants were not much better than the Catholics. As my professors say, “we had Catholics killing protestants, protestants killing catholics, and everybody killing the jews”.
When Adventists refer to the medieval Church as anti-Christ we are including ourselves. The mistakes of the Church in the past were made by “we, not they”, and it is the Universal Church’s responsibility to correct those mistakes. Sure there are fundamentalist Adventists which like to pretend that its all the Catholic Churches fault, but they are no more common than Catholics which would like to see the Inquisition reinstated.
Adventists do indeed deny the traditional conception of hell, but it is more important to ask why than simply consider this a problem in itself. Since I became an Adventist (converting from Baptist) I have lost my traditional belief in hell, but now I fear going there all there all the more because of the relationship that is absent there --that with the God whose charachter is not maligned by the doctrine of eternal torment. Thomas Aquinas represents the pinnacle of Catholic Theology. He said in his summa that sin, being wrought against an eternally perfect God, requires a punishment equal to the holiness of God, thus the eternal punishment of the sinner is demanded. He also says that Christ’s death appeased God for this demand on the sinner. This is representative of the doctrine of eternal hell in many Churches. It would work just fine had God said, “you shall not eat it, netiher shall ye touch it, or else I will have to kill and then punish you”. But that is not what God said. God said “in the day you eat thereof (sin) ye shall surely die” -it is something that happens, not something God does to the sinner. We have brought death upon ourselves by sinning against God, and ignoring His will. God is not vindictive, but let’s sinners perish.
If ever Arianism was held in the Adventist Church it was by two or three members in the 19th century, who gave it up quickly. No Adventist denies the “Trinity”. Throughout my University experience i have heard of more Catholic priests who are athiests than Advetnists who are “Arians”.
The Adventist Church does have a bizarre view of the second coming, because faith in the soon return of Christ to this earth is indeed considered “bizarre” by todays standards. Yet it will happen, that’s what we believe.
The Adventist view on marriage is that it is divinely ordained, between a man and a woman, and if you want to look at what we teach go to
