Ok, so there’s lot’s to criticise about Protestants, but let’s have a positive thread, what do you like about Protestantism (or any other non-Catholic religion, for that matter?)

I like the fervor of Evangelicals, and their willingness to try new methods of spreading the Gospel.

I like the friendliness of Mormons, their focus on family life, and their coordinated missionary efforts.

What I think is interesting about Mormons is the involvement of their active members in their church. Every one of them ends up acting as a teacher or minister at one point or another (those who are active at least). It was one of the things that first struck me about their church and one of the reasons why I respect so many of the Mormon friends that I know.

That’s not to say that there aren’t Catholics who get just as involved. It just seems that Mormons who go to church are expected to engage in these activities and it’s hard for them to get out of them (unless they just stop going to church, which is maybe the downside. Some react to the pressure of “callings” in a negative way). I’d love it if I saw more Catholics get just as involved in their parishes as the Mormons I know are in theirs. I’m still getting used to my new parish (just moved), but I fully intend to start participating in more than just the mass as soon as I get a better idea of what is available at this parish, and that’s the result of the Mormon influence in my life more so than the Catholic influence I’m sorry to say.

The major thing in favor of Protestantism and all religions other than Catholic is that it makes people look beyond themselves to something higher and greater, thus spurring virtue and peace.

What is good about Protestantism in particular is that it has kept many people in a relationship with the Church. Even if the connection is tenuous and they have heretical ideas at their core, they do keep the name of Christ before them as someone who redeemed them, saves them and to whom they will one day answer.

I like that because of protestantism, the Council of Trent came to be.
I like that by looking into the jws, I became a Catholic.
I like that by looking at the mormons, I became a better Catholic.

When my protestant friend had an operation, and was laid up for a few days, her church came and painted her living room and built her flowerbeds.
Their fellowship is almost enough to make me jump ship. Almost.

Hey, Luke, when members of my small group get sick or have problems, we all take turns cooking for them and we bring the meals to the house until the crisis is past. We also pick up kids from school and generally help out however we can.

For me, the best thing about Protestants – I refer particularly to “high church” Lutherans, some Presbyterians and Episcopalians – is the MUSIC!!! They even sing stuff like the Agnus Dei in Latin. Puts us truly to shame.

For me, the best thing about protestantism is that it is not too late for them to convert or revert to the Catholic Church. 😃

One thing I admire in many Protestants is their familiarity with Scripture. Most Catholics don’t hold a candle to that.

Yet it’s odd to me that with such familiarity with Scripture, Protestants don’t see the Catholic teachings that are based on scripture, such as the sacraments. They don’t think of us a “biblical,” for example. Yet Scripture tells us the early Christians met daily. So why don’t Protestants have a daily service, like Catholics? That’s just one small example … not intended to be a put-down but rather a rejoinder to the notion that Catholics aren’t biblical.

Here are some of the things I like from my exposure to Protestantism:
  • It was an atmosphere which brought my wife back to faith
  • They like to talk theology
  • They like to read the bible
  • I can play my guitar at service
  • Fellowship is greatly emphasized (Im gregarious)
  • Non-formalized prayer

**Nothing at all. I’m sorry, I just don’t see anything appealing in denominations. Maybe only what they hold as orthodox, charisma, and generousity but everything else: :tsktsk: **

I have to agree. Music!!http://bestsmileys.com/music1/10.gif I am a “revert” from the Episcopal Church. DH and I now do the music in our Catholic parish and we throw in as many “cross over tunes” as we can. We do miss the music!! http://bestsmileys.com/music2/23.gif

Mercygate,
That would be soo nice.
Our last parish priest used to introduce himself to us every time we went to mass (Which is nice, but I feel like Mrs Claude Raines; you know, the invisible woman).
I’ve been a member of this small parish for 10 years, and I seriously doubt they would notice if I died.

In regard to the evangelical Protestants I know I like:
  • Their openness in talking about their faith and love for Christ with anyone
  • Their passion for evanglization and their concern for the souls of others
  • Their love for Scripture and knowledge of Scripture
  • Their family discussions about their love for Christ and the Bible - in short - they talk about Jesus to their kids a lot
  • They pray before each meal regardless of where they are
I think many Catholics can learn a lot from our evangelical brothers and sisters (including me)

I believe God can use other Chucrths, even if they ahve not the fullfillment of revolation, as an exsample. I love how Protestants love scripture. I also love how at least conserveitive evangelicals will back up up on Life sisues.

Their are many well meaning Protestants, who I know if they understood what the Catholic faith really was about, they woudl jump on the train of our faith.

I like the energy they bring when the convert to Catholicism 🙂 👍

I used to think that the things that appealed to me about the Protestant churches were their sense of community, their friendliness, their openess, and their great furver in their faith. But now that I’ve returned to my home Catholic parish, I find the same things in my parish as I did in the Protestant parishes. I’ve even found the music that I love (gospel) in other Catholic parishes around town, and I attended one Mass recently, complete with the clapping, the joyous blended sounds, the guitar, drums and piano (it was an African-American parish).

I wouldn’t go back to the Protestant churches for the world! 👍

I wish I could be as open to evangelization as they are…I’ve been “evangelized” to so many times on the street and elsewhere because I’m Catholic and apparently, to some not saved because of that, that I’ve kind of turned against the idea because it’s been such an insult to me…share the love of Christ in your actions and words, yes, but question someone else’s salvation based on their religion, that gets me every time.

Honestly now, who’s fault is that - yours or theirs? Maybe a little of each?
