At first I expected this whole website to be filled with bigoted opinions or ignorant “facts” but you guys here obviously have phD in something. Instead of ignoring facts like typical “Christians” debaters would do, you guys actually answered the question - to the point where I have to ask myself that question.

So what I’m saying is - wow! impressed of your intelligence, I gained insights after being here. I’m Atheist and will be unless an angel appears to me and tell me to change my ways.
But really I’m impress, I’m glad I found this forum

You know…there was a recent survey done (I can’t remember the source) …on who knew the answers on some BASIC catholic knowledge…athiests scored higher than catholics and …catholics actually scored the worst!

So your (name removed by moderator)ut, all that stuff we have in common: intelligence, life experiences and such are very welcome here!

May goodness and truth always follow you and bring you closer to Himself.

Glad to have you on here. 😃 I have only been a member for a couple of weeks and thoroughly enjoy learning more about my faith and other points of views including Atheists.

The CC has a very long history in the formation of the first tertiary educational institutions in the form of monastery and nunnery schools and schools of thought and critical thinking, theology and philosophy. I’m always impressed by the well thought out arguments and non-confrontational manner in which many of my fellow Catholics seek to communicate, debate and discuss with others on here.

I might add that a few of the Protestants on here are also very well educated and argue their points in a cohesive and rational way, they also seek to understand our faith better.
Some of the Prots on CAF understand Catholic theology and the Faith better than many lay Catholics I know.

As St Thomas Aquinas warned ‘Beware the man of a single book’.

P.S. I’ll try to set up a Poll to gauge how many degree holders, PHD holders etc we have on here. 🙂

…

Are you referring to a specific question or thread?

I find your username interesting. It represents a philosophical dichotomy compared to your stated Religion.

I am interested to know: you identify yourself as “Atheist”, but call yourself “No-Beliefs”.
Which better represents your personal understanding of the universe?
  1. Athiest: The explicit belief that there is no god or God. Any apparent evidence to the contrary is fraudulent, misrepresented or misunderstood.
  2. Formal Agnostic: It is not possible to know whether or not there is a God, and definitely not truthfully possible to worship a God, as it is not possible to know if one exists.
  3. Informal Agnostic: I don’t know if there is a God, but may be persuadable based on the right evidence
  4. No formal beliefs or philosophy in this area, but strongly skeptical.
  5. other.
I would point out that from a philosophical point of view, true formal atheism is a religious belief. It is a structured belief about the nature of the World and the Divine, without scientific basis.
Formal or informal agnosticism are the most rational positions to hold in the absence of other evidence.

Welcome NoBeliefs. I bet you have some beliefs whether you realize it or not. 🙂

One good thing to do is go to the landing page under Library and read through some of the Tracts of your choice. Another one is to use the search function to find threads current and old that cover a topic that you are interested in. I’ve found some threads back four or five years ago that have been very enlightening and fun to read.

Good to see you here asking questions.

I saw an interesting interview where Atheist Penn Jillette defended the pope’s position and Catholicism in a fiery exchange with CNN’s Piers Morgan a Catholic!

I’m new here so won’t post a link.

Well, wait til you start reading the big guns. Some of the best minds in history have been Catholic thinkers-- theologians, philosphers, scientists. You can go down the rabbit hole and never come out.

OUT!

You’re going to give us big heads.

lol
:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

To the OP. Thank you for the compliment. You will find that, as a religion, Catholicism is only interested in Truth, whether it be scientific, Theologic (Theological?), philosophic, etc. All Truth leads back to God, so the more Truth we know, the better.

Feel free to ask us anything you like ^^ I will say though, you shouldn’t set yourself to atheism, just as you shouldn’t set yourself to any specific belief structure. As an atheist, you likely believe that rational thought is the greatest way of discerning knowledge. That being said, you’ve specified that you’ll be an atheist until an irrational occurance happens (supernatural is a better word than irrational here, but you get the idea) I think you should keep your mind more open to rational discussion about Catholicism, and not make the irrational mistake of discounting it outright 😛

Indeed. Catholicism has a long and distinguished history of invention, discovery, exploration and deep though. It’s a beautiful history filled with all sorts of wondrous knowledge.

On an unrelated note, does anyone else think wondrous should be spelled wonderous? It’s one of those words that always throws me for a loop >_>

I guess it takes all kinds to make a forum!

Your frankness does you credit, No Beliefs.

Don’t expect to see any angels just yet - God is usually a lot more subtle than that in changing people’s minds and hearts. 😉

Yeah, thanks for the welcome. I have some “Catholic Knowledge” because my mom raised me a Catholic till I started question life. But that’s over my head now. I’m glad we have people with knowledge here. I’ll enjoy my stay here.
Thanks again for the welcome!

Welcome!! I think you’ll find an angel or two here 😉
NoBeliefs,
The most disbelieving atheist I have ever known, and I have known many, converted two years ago. Ya just never know!! 😃

I have found many angels here!!! it took an angel from here and far across the country to help me find a much needed social services office in my own town …and it ended up being just across the street from me! What a blessing!! And so many here have prayed for me, helped in so many ways.

Welcome!

Hello NB,

You’ll find lots of us who have a story like yours - raised Catholic then left the Church. And many of those, like myself, returned to the Church years or decades later, when I realized it was all true, and beautiful and sublime beyond imagining too. As CS Lewis wrote, God can be very unscrupulous in the ways in which he draws us back to himself. For me it was my wife’s choir, and butterflies. He also said that a young atheist cannot be too careful about the books he reads - that might also be said about the forums he joins. 😃

All that your or anybody can honestly do is to seek the truth wherever it may lead. Buckle up and hold on! 🙂

Indeed! Leah Libresco and Jennifer Fulwiler are two recent ones who come to mind, and have blogged about it.

You posed this 4-1

This isn’t meant as an April fool…is it? 🙂 …Just kidding.

Welcome to CA. Hang around, I think you’ll find the conversations lively.

Yeah right now, my mom keeps forcing me to convert.
I believe that if I believe in something, it must be a true belief, forcing to convert back to Catholicism does not help.
Hopefully I do “see some angels here” but again I’m going to be atheist a while because my opinion of society contradicts the church’s rule.

yea, you can’t be brought into a love relationship kicking and screaming.
