To Catholics...

I just got done reading To Protestants and thought I would return the favor. In the aformentioned thread the request posed to protestants was that we keep an open mind when considering our relationship with God and that catholocism may be the road we need to travel.

I am not so much asking that catholics keep an open mind to a conversion to protestantism but more keep an open mind to what we have to say. You may be surprised. We can be kind of smart sometimes. (shocking, I know :bigyikes: )

Recently, it was indicated in another thread that I participated in that protestants are anything but Christ followers. That they THINK they follow Christ but in actuallity they reject Him. (see Outside the Church) That because we aren’t members of the catholic church that we despise it. I would like to say that just because I am not part of the catholic church I DO NOT despise the catholic church. Nor does anyone appreciate someone telling them that they reject Christ when every day we strive to follow Him and Him ONLY. I said that I follow Christ only and this verse was given in response:
1 John 2:4:

4The man who says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in him.

I don’t know about you all but this got me a little hot under the collar as you will see if you read the thread.

Look, I know y’all mean well. That you feel that you have found the Truth and because I am not there with you, you want to make sure that I see it and become a part of it because you care. I get it. BUT, remember the Golden Rule… Treat your neighbor as YOU want to be treated. Just as I know that you would not appreciate being told you are a liar and you hate Christ or any of the other anti-catholic blather, I also do not appreciate the anti-protestant behavior that is sometimes blatant in catholic behavior but also can be a subtle thought process but manacing all the same.

So please, keep an open mind that we protestants are here to learn. Even if they seem that they are idiots and just here to spread anti-cathlolic misunderstandings God brought them HERE to learn. Speak in love and understanding and believe me, you will get a MUCH better response.

I think what makes Catholics seem disrespectful, at times, is that we are so in awe that we have been given and have accepted the GIFT of faith, that we want to share it with EVERYONE.

I have some devout Protestants in my family, but I see them misssing out on so many of God’s gifts. It makes me very sad.

I like your above post and your approach to learn things and clear misunderstandings with the Catholics and vice versa. There is no harm in being open minded. One should be steadfast in one’s faith simultaneously one could leave a window or door open for still more truth to come which could come from anywhere, one never knows.
I suggest that the Catholics merge with the Protestants or the vice versa for a United Christendom. Is it an impossible thing?

I thought since you were addressing Catholic’s, you meant me as well. Then I read your post. I don’t know anything about the other post you mentioned. I’m sorry if one or more of my fellow Catholic’s made you upset. My dad and his family are Baptist. He past away a few years ago. A real good man. Not much of a church goer, but very generous and caring. I grew up with a Catholic mom and a Baptist dad. We didn’t see a rift about religion. When my dad died, my mom gave me his little pocketsized new testament he had from the Navy. It was dogeared and worn out. I never knew til then how much my dad believed. We Catholics believe Protestants only have partial truths. During the Reformation they did away with all Catholic traditions, and rites, and only kept the Bible. The only thing they have is the Bible and use that for their new doctrine of Bible Alone, and Faith Alone.

I know many of the Protestants here have grown from the traditions of the Reformers of 1517 and those who left the CC and join the traditions of the Reformers.

You are a part of the Church indirectly. Your baptism made you united with us in the Mystical Body of Church, we also desire Protestants to be Catholic.

We ask that both sides to be charitable, Catholics, Protestants and Orthodox, as well as Non-Christians.

You only reject partial truths because you grow out of the Traditions of the Protestant Reformers. So its not through the fault of your own, that your belief differs than our own.

I too am Protestant (Southern Baptist specifically), and am considering converting to Catholicism, as I have found many issues that I am in total agreement with in the Catholic Church and I truly LOVE many things about it. There are some things that I am working through, or to understand, but that is going to take time. That is one of the reasons I’m on this site. I just responded to one of the answers in a thread I posted (Persecution of non-Catholics), that dealt with much of the same type of response. My thread caused much heated debate, unintentionally, but still…

I just also wanted to mention, that it makes things more difficult for me, considering conversion, when I get emotionally rattled when I read mean spirited comments about my religion of origin that are made from a Catholic POV. I have encountered the oposite as well (meaning Protestants with nasty comments), and that is also upsetting to me, because the two always seem to find each other and start pointing fingers, and berating each others beliefs. I would never intentionally insult any Christians beliefs, and anything that might be taken as such was absolutlely not what I wanted. I just really don’t understand some times, but I really want to. It is important for me and others in my position to just accept that people won’t always agree, and there is always going to be those who feel the need to stir the proverbial poo.

I think you posted a well thought out reply in all Christian charity. Of course, you are a fellow Christian and sister in Christ! I’m shocked and saddened that anyone would tell you otherwise…especially since we know that we can not judge the heart. I hope that the person (or persons) was just an over zealous Catholic who ‘spoke without thinking.’

My family is all still Southern Baptist. A good majority of my friends are Non-denoms and other various demonimations. These people are good Christians who love Christ and only desire to follow him to the best of their knowledge and ability. One can see the love of Christ burning within many of them!

I’m glad that you chose to ignore (forgive) and continue to hang around and learn/share.

I am so grateful that I encountered none of this coming into the Church. I am fond of quoting (rather, paraphrasing) G. K. Chesterton, who said that he might have become Catholic years earlier if it hadn’t been for — Catholics!

Keep in mind that it is exceeding difficult to succinctly discuss principles and doctrines in print without offending anyone. If you DON’T offend anyone ever, you probably have watered down your descriptions of the faith to the point of ambiguity!

It is important to be charitable and pastoral. Such virtues are, actually, NOT generally lacking in our culture and in our church today (believe it or not). IMO, we are actually MORE lacking in clear, unambiguous teaching of the faith.

Something I try to cultivate is the ability to NOT take it personally, when someone denigrates a belief of mine. Denigrating an IDEA is NOT the same as denigrating a person. We’ve forgotten this in our society and we are losing the ability to have civil debates because of it! More and more you see that people who hold different ideas cannot get along.

So back to the point. The Catholic Church DOES make the claim to be THE visible and authoritative church that Christ established. She does claim that no-one can be saved outside of the catholic church (understood properly in that Grace comes to Earth from God and that He has chosen to use the Church he established to be the conduit of that Grace). Some people of good will and honest intent through no genuine fault of their own believe in Christ, but are separated from His Church. They may even hate what they mistakenly believe the Catholic Church to be. But in the end, God knows the score and people like that are catholic in the heart in spite of what the mixed up head thinks.

Yes, this might be offensive to people in that category. Such folks should stop and realize that their OWN beliefs when expressed clearly and bluntly are offensive to certain others as well. Once we all understand that, we can let our prickles down and disagree without being offended!

It also works both ways. Too many catholics think that anybody who criticizes catholicism is an “anti-catholic” and ought to be ashamed of themselves. This is myopic. Reprehensible “anti-catholicism” is not opposition to catholicism, it is a behavior that MIScharacterizes, distorts or uses deception or ignorance to make catholicism look bad. Catholics need to learn the difference.

I agree with the original post. We should all be charitable. Having been Episcopalian (although never of the “hate Catholic” variety) and now Catholic, I would be offended that anyone would called un-Christian or told they followed Satan, etc.

In the same spirit, I would appeal to the original poster and all other protestants to take this same sort of message to their protestant friends and tell them to cease and desist calling Catholics non-Christian, pagans (clearly meant in a derogatory way), etc. When this happens, and it happens a lot, such persons reveal not only their own hatred, but a profound lack of knowledge about their own faith, not just the Catholic faith.

As someone who left the Church as a teenager and then became a protestant fundamentalist in my twenties only to find my way back home through a lot of reading, I can honestly say that no protestant I’ve ever met hates Jesus or is being led by the devil.

Most protestants are very sincere followers of our Lord and really are trying to be the best people they can be according to the ways set forth by Jesus in the Gospels.

And while there are a few Catholic haters and Protestant haters, the majority of Christians are doing the best they can to love one another.

I’ve made many mistakes (and ruined what could’ve been good relationships) by trying to argue someone to the Catholic faith and that never works.

Charity and love on both sides are what’s needed, especially with the forces of darkness that are threatening us in today’s world.

That is, not all that claim to be Catholic live as if they are Catholic, but this is something I find true in all churchs, all that carry the title Christians don’t reflect that name - self -righteousness runs wild and on these forums we all get overzealous in trying to express ourselves in our beliefs, I am the most guilty:blush:. But, I try to remember that the person on the other side of the computer screen is not my enemy, no matter how ill thier post may seem, or how angry I may become. I just pray harder for my own understanding along with thiers. I cannot change the hearts of others, nor thier minds, I can only try to allow God’s grace to work in me and change the hardness within my own heart.

I truely believe the fullness of faith is to found withnin the teachings of the Cathoic Church, but I do know many of my protestant brothers and sisters are following Chirst with the grace which God bestows upon them and if I find myself in heaven, which I feel I’m secure in that hope through the promises of Christ, I will see many of them there also.

When I decided to come into full communion, I didn’t leave my old church because I thought that church was not Christian, nor did I leave it because of some ill done to me. I left to follow Christ to where he is leading me, which I see as the fullness of his love. I have a great love for my brothers and sisters from my old church. In fact I’m still associated with many of them and I am part of a joint ministry with a few of them. Though I pray for thier conversion to the Catholic Church, I do the same for many of my Catholic brothers and sisters, that is for thier conversion to the fullness of the faith and I request prayer from both my Catholic and non-Catholic brothers and sisters in Christ for my own continuing conversion.

There are certain sects out there that I see as truly leading people on a wide path to hell and certain dissenting groups that claim to be Catholic doing the same, but overall I try to remember this conversation between Jesus and St John…

Thank you for all of your kind words… I got pretty discouraged a few days ago. I almost left without another word but then I decided I wasn’t going to let someone else’s behavior decide my fate with Christ. If Christ leads me to the catholic church Satan is going to try his very best to keep me out. Even use good intentioned catholics to do it. That is not to say that you are led by Satan, I can’t stress that enough, just that he will use anyone and anything to put doubt in your mind. I am still a LONG way from being catholic but I decided long ago that no one but God and myself would decide for me what I believe.

Just remember that whatever you are saying - will it bring them closer to God or will it make their path even rockier and longer than it should be?

I submit that you should turn towards Christ and because of Christ, and what He has done for you and for all of us, and not because of any human person, or what they might say to you, today.

This thread was started as a caution to Catholics against being uncharitable towards Protestants. And I believe it was in response to Protestants being uncharitable (but I could be wrong about that because I didn’t read any other post).

I am sure that throughout time, not just today, both Catholics and Protestants have been uncharitable towards eachother, and, perhaps, they have even been unChristian towards eachother. That is unfortunate. That says nothing about the faith. It may say much about human failings.

That some person is uncharitable or unChristian says nothing about any faith. Persons, even persons of faith, may not always portray the faith in their lives, that doesn’t mean the faith is wrong, it may merely mean the person attempting to exemplify the faith is weak.

I am Catholic. Once upon a time I was Episcopalian. I don’t see my change in faith as particularly large, but I suspect many Catholics may see my change as very large. To each his own decision.

If you read the posts on this fora, you will find many anti-Episcopalian or anti-Anglican posts. Both are Protestant and are of the places I left. I could take them personally and be offended, but I don’t. I put my trust in the Lord. I know that He has led me to his Church.

Your relationship is with Christ Jesus. Not with people. People may be friendly and very nice. They may be your friends. But your relationship is with Jesus and the Church He founded.

Jesus founded the church that is currently known as the Catholic Church. He has asked all of us believers to be of “one body”. I can only suppose that splitting His body into random pieces (i.e., the various Protestant groups, the Eastern group, etc.) is not helpful, at the very least.

But in making your decision, it is so important that you pray and look into your heart, it should never be about what someone else says or does, or what someone else writes down, even this thing that you are reading now. It should be about

you
AND
God

and no one else.

I will pray for you. I will pray for your discernment. When you pray, you don’t have to do anything I suggest, but, were I you, I would ask for the guidance of the Holy Spirit. I would pray earnestly for the guidance of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit will not take you the wrong way.
