Some irresponsible fool named FenceSitter posted the following on a notoriously antiCatholic forum under the above title. For some reason some on that forum are a wee bit upset and demand lots of documentation. Does anyone know of a good Catholic critique of Calvin’s Institutes that documents the above liberties extensively (preferably including an on-line link) and demonstrates the problematic philosophical basis of Calvinism in late scholasticism? Some of the folks over there are what you might call touchy when you raise the possibility that Calvinism is not perfection. Even THEIR moderators, who I would not consider the most unbiased people in the world, have edited out Bad Things said to Mr. FenceSitter.
Did you ever check Calvin’s references in the Institutes to see whether the way he uses the sources lines up with what they are actually saying? Just curious, because I became a lot less of a Calvinist after I started reading Calvin and started doing {sic] comparing his uses of sources and his text. He ignores much of what Augustine said, for example. Calvin had a fantastic memory and personally he was very pious, but I think he took liberties he should not have.

😃 Looks like they’re gonna get lots of stuff they may not particularly like to hear. This is part of “due diligence” 😃

Thanks, Sis. 👍

I know FenceSitter a little bit, and he had posted some wonderful comments in the CA fora before the “black-out”. While you may think that what he has written at some time is irresponsible - and you may even be right - I must condemn calling him an “irresponsible fool”. He is most definitely not a fool (from what I have seen), and this kind of language doesn’t help anyone. If you must condemn, you should condemn his actions (his posts) and not his person. Particularly because in this case, you are wrong.

I’m not sure I remember him. Was he debating OSAS?

Oh we discussed many, many things. He’s the one with the posts that read like riddles (sometimes). I remember discussing the Papacy, the Blessed Virgin, and a few other topics (probably OSAS too). He eventually caved in to Catholicism, where we’re all fools. 😛

Oh, that person!:whacky:

Aah I didn’t know that he finally caved in. I knew he was close, but I didn’t know that he’d gone over. That’s really awesome!

I don’t know if I would use the word caved in…but from what I got out of his posts, he is a person openly seeking God’s will no matter where it may lead him.

I got the sense there was some level of sarcasm in the phrase “irresponsible fool”…

This has a lot of good information but doesn’t answer the immediate need.
Darn. I thought Dave would come through. Have you checked Jimmy Akin’s stuff? Nobody specifically on the other side of the Tiber immediately comes to mind, but there are no doubt some scholarly discourses available that could bring in some Protestant back-up.

I’ll keep lookin’.

And I haven’t mustered the mustard to check it all out for myself. . .yet!

IFency’s just going to go through the Institutes one quote at a time, and so far the opposition is objecting strenously. He has been informed that Calvinism has nothing to do with Calvin particularly. The things people say…

This will take a while. Pop one bubble at a time…If Calvin’s quotes don’t line up with the sources, then it’s just air without substantiation. They won’t like that either.

Fency just got called vague. This is an improvement over the earlier “this is just an ad hominem”. He is not without verbal skills to respond.

Party time…

When I read the original post, I thought, “Has Fencesitter changed his name?” That sounds like something he would say.

I am thrilled to hear that Fencesitter has gotten off the Fence. Good thing too, that fence had almost completely fallen over towards the Tiber before you jumped:thumbsup:

God Bless,
Maria

When you do, make sure you get copyright immediately!

They never do

Paint 'em a picture, brother. . .use pretty colors!

well, if that’s the best they can do . . .
