The last time I wrote about one of my crazy escapades, quite a few of the CAF members got a kick out of my narrative. And so I thought I would provide you with another one of my tales of adventure and exasperation (as a bonus, I can clear my mind of all anxiety by writing this).

It all started last night (Friday evening) when I was babysitting my three favorite children - and that is NOT sarcasm - they truly are my favorite kids ever! Mind you now, I have been struggling with a bruised tibia and torn tendons in my knee, and was hobbling on crutches all week. Because I very much wanted to not be tagged for driving while impaired, I decided to make my injury less obvious by being a trooper and going without my crutches.

Babysitting was normal; entertaining the boy by telling him stories about my mishaps, picking his sisters up from music lessons, taking them home, saying the rosary, corralling them back to the living room and removing all distractions so we can finish the rosary, preparing food, playing a game, and being told about how I can improve my face.

It was a lovely evening (even though I felt as though my knee was going to telescope), and on top of it, I got free cake because my family (on my mom’s side) is related to St. John Bosco. But that’s a whole other story right there…

NOW the fun begins.

I returned home at 10pm to discover that there was a water main break on my street. Our Department of Public Works workers move with all the speed of the Eastern Church, and so I knew that we were going to be without a toilet and shower for quite some time…which would not have been a problem if I did not have to attend a brunch at my college the next day where I was to receive academic recognition!

When I woke up this morning (the day of the brunch), I heard my father howling in the other room, and very colorfully describing where the workers could go and how they could get there. I instantly realized that there had been no progress and I began thinking up ways I could get myself clean, “If I take three filled water bottles, I can use two for my hair and one for my body!” Because, of course, it is better to go to one’s death than to go without a shower. It’s a proven fact.

While I was lying in bed going through mental turmoil, my father barged into my room and told me that I needed to pack up my clothing, because we were going to get ready at my nana’s home, which is about a 20 minute drive from my home. It was 9am, the brunch was due to start at 11am, and the ride from my nana’s to the college would be about 25 minutes. It was a tight squeeze, but we had no choice. So I threw all my clothing and makeup into a bag and we headed off into the immensely capable and judgmental hands of my nana.

With lead foot…er…my father driving, we arrived at my nana’s in an impressive 15 minutes. I was terrified to take a shower at her house, because I knew that she would penalize me if a strand of my hair was left behind in her drain. But I had no choice! Usually, I like to stand underneath the stream of hot water, contemplating life, but today, I had no time to pity myself during a 45 minute shower. I was out in ten minutes, and soon realized that my leg was about to slow me down. My leg wouldn’t bend, and I had the most gosh awful time putting my pants on.

Dripping wet, I limped down stairs, slipped on my sock, slid through my nana’s kitchen, and headed to her half bathroom so my father could take his shower in the full bath upstairs. Next, I discovered that my nana’s ancient extension chord was not compatible with my hairdryer and swearing to myself, I proceeded to do my makeup; of course, I stabbed myself in the eye with my eyeliner, smeared it on my cheek, and ended up putting more foundation on one side of my face than the other.

My father was finished showering and dressing in record time, and sent me back upstairs so I could use the outlet for my hairdryer. Somehow, my knee managed to stay in one piece as I ran up the stairs. Thankfully, my hair did dry…but not with out an extremely prominent cowlick forming on the right side of my head. Nice.

10:37am.

We had less than 25 minutes to get to my college. “We’ll go to Nana’s,” they said. “It’ll be fine,” they said.

By the grace of God, we made it to my school with three minutes to spare! “I will drop you and your mother off at the door, and I will find a parking spot.” My father shouted, glaring at the family who took the last parking spot.

My mom and I then walked to the door, only to discover a sign that said the brunch was moved to a different location on campus - a delightful building with many stairs to test the durability of my knee…and sanity.

We did make it on time. The brunch was lovely, we got to sit with a very kind family, and I received my award alongside all the other 4.0 students. I really cannot complain at all, especially since this made such a great story. Or at least, I think it is a pretty fun story.

Thank you all for listening. And I hope you enjoyed my ramblings on. Hopefully I gave you a bit of a chuckle. 😃

Oh, and the DPW is STILL working on the break as we speak, nearly 24 hours later. 🤷 lol

God bless

“all the speed of the Eastern Church” - that’s wonderfully descriptive. 👍

Thank you; that was nice. I’m glad you got your award and had a good time. 🙂
