Sorry if this is in the wrong place. I couldn’t find a place to put this so I just chose here. If you are someone that overcame masturbation, heard of how someone else did, or you did something that helped, please share your story of how you did it.

Thank you

I converted to Catholicism and received the sacrament of confession.

After that, I haven’t even really had the desire. Ever during my catechumenate I probably was doing it once a week or so.

Glory to Jesus Christ! It’s all his power. Not mine.

for about 20 years i kept falling into masturbation ,and was going to non Catholic Churches where i kept praying and confessing it each time i fell,

It was like i couldnt find any solution to my impure desires although i was praying and confessing,

In the year of St Paul i found myself coming back to the Catholic Church,in which i have found alot of healing

I found a really good priest and started to confess to him my impure desires and acts.

after a little while, after one particular confession i had with him,i felt my heart cleansed of the impure desires and lust which was driving me into filthy sins all the time.

i couldnt believe it,my heart felt so free and released

i am grateful for finding that Priest and being cleansed ,by God of course,

Since then i feel like a new man without those impure desires and i havnt been led down that path of impure acts anymore because i dont have them in my heart anymore,

Thanks be to God

I was an atheist during my early teens, when I started doing it. But, even then, something struck me as peculiar and unnatural about the whole act. And I used to wonder about and mourn for the purity of childhood. But lust takes over your life and warps your mind, I fell into all kinds of perversions and fetishes. It’s shameful but it’s true. It became a habit and hard to control. I would try to abstain for many days because it felt so unnatural but would keep falling back. When I discovered Catholicism a few years ago, I realized the true horror of sin, and that’s when I fought against it as hard as I could. God gave me the grace to see how horrible a thing I was doing, and the guilt inside me finally forced me to give it up. I fell a couple times here and now, and it’s a battle you have to face everyday, dealing with impure thoughts, avoiding looking at women lustfully… but by the grace of God, now I’m pure and would rather die than sin against purity. You have to realize what you are doing, it’s a sin against yourself, you’re defiling your own body; it’s a sin against your spouse/future spouse, grave infidelity; and it’s a sin against God, who gave you life.

If you’re struggling, I suggest lots of corporal penance and prayer. You should have the will to rather beat yourself to death than sin. It’s tough, but you have to muster the courage. Like our Lord said, it’s better to lose your body than to have both your body and soul cast into hell. Good wishes, and keep praying for the grace to overcome.

Wow! That’s a tough and great resolution. Good for you!

My doctor prescribed Paxil for my depression and anxiety. A side effect of this medication is that it severely disrupts the sex drive.

I decided that I did not want to offend God any longer by that act. Everytime I get the urge, I think of that and it subsides.

Though I faltered no too long after 2 months of not doing, I went to confession and have not done it since or had the desire. I read on another forum to pray 3 Hail Marys every time you get the urge, go for walks etc. I can honestly say that I have prayed a Hail Mary every night before going to bed and have slept with a crucifix and have not had the urge. Perhaps this is something you can try. The MOST IMPORTANT thing you can do of course is pray! 🙂

Confession can surely help.

If embarrasement of confessing such a sin is helpful in overcoming masturbation, that’s OK.

As well, finding other outlets, filling time with other activities, prayer, spending time with other people (most people do not masturbate in the company of others ;)), cold showers when tempted, etc., etc.

I see. I once watched a movie and there was this guy who was having issues with lust. Each time this girl popped up his mind, he went and took a shower and he was behaving weird under the shallow–shivering and screaming… I couldn’t put the pieces of the puzzle together.

Now I understand, it was a cold shower and it helped–temporally, I must add.
