Is it ok to miss mass because of weather? It is -45 windchill here and I was just wondering. A few things I have read says it is ok but I wanted to double check. Thaks in advance.

I would most likely stay home if I was in your situation. I would really hate to be stuck somewhere in that kind of weather

Our current priest has said he will not cancil mass for the weather, for any who are able to make it to the church and utilizing whatever ministers show up. That said, he always reminds people that we are not obligated to risk injury [snow covered icy roads - floods, road closures etc] to reach the church for a Holy Day of obligation …
Another priest I know, watched people risking life and limb on 3" of ice during an arctic freeze [one parishioner fell and broke a hip getting out of their car] … He said “When the weather is that extreme … stay home and read your bibles …” When the weather was that bad, he posted the church doors and cancelled mass …
Both of these good men realize that an obligation to attend mass does not mean risking a car crash where you could kill yourself or some othe innocent victim of your false sense of duty … reading the scriptures for the day and making a spiritual communion seems the better part of valor …
however I read at a mass once during a snow storm … there was father, and about 5 of us who made it to church that Sunday … and if it had been any worse my husband and I would not have ventured out … we debated that morning … and opted to go
… we also shoveled the walks … for any brave souls that showed up to the later masses that day

Will you be missing other things in your life because of the windchill? If you would make it to work or the basketball game or the school meeting or the social gathering – then you should go to Mass. If it is truly a burden, then it is – not “okay” – but understandable in the eyes of a loving God and His Church.

that is a prudential judgement, using the same standards you would about the safety of any other activity. yes you can stay home from work if conditions are such that you would stay home from other activities–but no fair heading out to the mall later. can’t say how often I have observed people who are coughing and sneezing all over everyone at work, who were still considerate enough to stay home from Mass and not infect anyone there.

Thank you all for your help. I also desided that if I could go to the store or ect… that I could go to church. Needless to say I went to church this morining. It was cold out side and 58* inside but I am so glad that I went =0)
