Shenango,

Yes, that helps very much! I had no idea that Muslims believed that Jesus was created apart from Mary, making her no more Jesus’ mother than Joseph was His father. It seems strange, then, that He would be referred to throughout the Qur’an as the son of Mary, and not the son of Joseph. If neither had anything to do with Him biologically, why would He not be given the “-bar-” title of His father? Why is it not Jesus bar Joseph, if Joseph holds just as much relation to Jesus as Mary? Perhaps it’s my western thinking, but isn’t it disgraceful to refer to someone as the seed of their mother? Especially since she didn’t have anything to do with it in the first place?

Peace be with you,
RyanL
Hey Ryan

What Shenango explained *may * be one way to look at that verse…however it is not the only way and I dont know how popular or accepted that perspective is.

The verse states: The similitude of Jesus before Allah is as that of Adam; He created him from dust, then said to him: “Be”. And he was (3:59)

THe similarity is not that they were both created directly from dust, but that all God has to say for something to happen is “BE” and it is. The creation of a human being doesnt have be the result of a man and woman coming together each donating a set of chromosomes. Like Jesus was created with no mother, Adam was created with no father or mother. Eve was created with no mother (assuming adam was her “father” b/c she came from his ribs)…Also, if you look at the history of some of the messengers, many of them were old and their wife sterile and old and they were granted children.

Just because Jesus came from a virgin woman, doesnt mean that he is divine…it means that GOD the All powerful can do anything.

Hope that made sense 🙂
