To parents with kids about to go to college?

If your kids are not going to private Catholic colleges, are you worried about them at all?

Being brainwashed and trained to hate everything you taught them? Most colleges hustle radical leftist rhetoric today.

It is very regular to hear professors and activists on campus referring to Christian society as the root of all hate and bigotry in society. Lewd, sacrilegious jokes by intellectuals are common.

My faith GREW when I was exposed to the world.
I suppose it’s one thing to be fearful, but if you’ve done your best as parents to instill the faith then, “Be not afraid”.🤷
 
Current college student, heart of the Midwest, haven’t gotten any of that. I’ve heard more of that stuff from some of my friends who are atheist than from professors. I can actually count on one hand all the times I heard anything like that.
  1. Math professor married to an astrologist. Jokingly offered astrological readings
  2. Finance textbook mentioning that the medieval Catholic Church lumped all interest under usury
I’m like Em_in_FL. My faith has actually grown. I’m the kid in the dorm who didn’t miss a mass all school year. For that matter, I even sing in the choir at church.

All of that isn’t to say this brainwashing doesn’t happen; just that it’s not as widespread as people seem to think.
 
No, I’m not concerned. For the above well stated reasons; I don’t think it’s that prevalent.

My oldest son is going to a secular college. I am concerned by not too worried. When we visited, we went to the Neuman center. Mass there was a joke. At my son’s request, I found a parish that was walking distance from his dorm that was more of a regular parish. My son has been very involved in our home parish and is pretty strong in his faith.

I am cautiously optimistic.

Yes, that happens, even at Catholic colleges. In fact, I think it’s worse at a Catholic college since it is confusing as well as hateful. Fortunately, we live in the “Bible belt” where Catholic kids are called upon to stand up for their faith regularly. I know my son is more prepared than I was at his age.

One thing I know I don’t plan on doing is cutting my son off from the world. 👍

I have spent the past 18 years training my son for spiritual battle. He is armed and ready. Or at least I pray he is. :gopray2:

In addition, I am not sure who you hang out with, but I spend a lot of time with intellectuals. Many college professors. And NONE of them tell lewd, sacrilegious jokes. Every one of them attend church services of some kind. Every one of them. 🤷

If you train your child right they will stay on the path of God.
There is nothing wrong with learning about science, as long as you think of it as learning about God’s creation? Is not math the language of God- with Pi, Fibonacci’s number, etc?
Just pray that your child is strong to withstand the temptation of partying, drinking, and fornication! 🙂

I hope it gives them some challenges like that. I don’t want robots. I want thinkers. if I wanted preaching to the choir, I’d choose a private Catholic college.

I don’t consider my kids so childish that anyone can brainwash them, whatever that’s supposed to mean.

besides, I didn’t donate all that money to my alma mater for nothing.
 
If you read Greg Lukianoff’s book, you might worry a little.

On some campuses, the 1960’s radicals who spent their days protesting the campus administration now ARE the campus administration, and are much less tolerant of dissenting views.

And if you read Tom Wolfe’s novel “I Am Charlotte Simmons” you’ll probably be tempted just to keep the kids at home.

Neither of my sons is attending a private Catholic college. The older one is at a campus that supports a large and thriving Catholic Church. He’s very devout and has done his adult confirmation class this past semester. 👍

The younger one has been at a small branch of that same college, but in an area that is majority Catholic. He’s seen the panoply of his peers’ faith or lack thereof, and it’s made him sad, but determined to fight the destruction of his faith. He can spot a jaded atheist from a mile away. :eek: I do have to stop him from going on the attack toward the CCC members or other evangelistic groups, however. He gets quite incensed about their aggressive approach.

you spent 17+ years teaching a child ethics and morality and you still can’t trust him? at 18 years old, he or is an adult.

if they’re that poorly taught, whose fault is it?

Not an issue for me, as I don’t have kids in college. But Greg Lukianoff would agree: they are adults. So why do some universities treat them as if they must be indoctrinated into the reigning culture? He’s the leftist / atheist, not me, and yet his organization finds itself defending conservatives against heavy handed university tactics. I only read the book!

colleges are little kingdoms with petty chiefs and their own little rituals. but so what? everyone should know what they are and that they do this to preserve their fief, a carefully carved out niche from the rest of the world. challenges to faith, I think, are good for the soul.

unemployed graduates or those having to pay taxes, get up every day to go to work, pay rent/mortgage, raise families stop believing Imagine.
 
We’re a few years from that, but not really fearing it. My husband and I both went to secular metropolitan colleges and came out fine. We were strong in our faith and honestly I never heard that insane of liberal rhetoric. Biology and engineering majors maybe don’t encounter it as much.

I think I’ll be afraid for my daughter’s physical safety more than anything.

College students should realize from the outset that their civil liberties may be less than those of other citizens, that they may be accused by campus boards and punishments imposed without due process. The extent of free speech rights and civil liberties available to students should be one item that is researched for any particular university before enrolling.

In my own little world I know of more than a few young adults that were well educated in the faith that have strayed. They were very, very well educated. Their parents were just as confident as most of you.

Yes, I worry.

I don’t look at a private, Catholic college as sheltering my kids. After all, why would we need to send them if they are already know it all? Are they there to learn? Or is a college degree just going through the motions so that everyone else agrees they know something?

I know that for me, although I am mature enough to ignore friends of mine who promote atheist, new age, hedonistic, and other such ideas, I don’t make a habit of keeping close to them. Why do we think our young adults don’t need the same?
